    1. [BELLARINE] Life after Rootsweb Mailing Lists
    2. Susie Zada
    3. With the end of Rootsweb Mailing Lists in March 2020 (yes this year) I wanted to make sure that people on my Mailing Lists had some follow-up contacts while we look at the options. For AUS-VIC@rootsweb.com, AUS-VIC-GEELONG-DISTRICT@rootsweb.com, AUS-VIC-BELLARINE-PENINSULA@rootsweb.com 1. VAFHO (Victorian Association for Family History Organisations) will be looking at any viable alternatives. Currently looking at Mailman - the GNU Mailing List Manager. As VAFHO is a non-profit volunteer organisation run by Volunteers we need to be cautious at committing to external costs but this may be a viable alternative. If you have other constructive suggestions, please contact me on vafhov@gmail.com 2. VAFHO helped work with the Victorian BDMs in February 2019 when there were some issues affecting all of us in Victoria. The closure of the Rootsweb Mailing Lists is another area that VAFHO believes we should help our Victorian researchers. I spoke with the VAFHO President this morning who agrees with these sentiments. 3. You should subscribe to the VAFHO Blog - that is where we announce anything important related to Victorian Family or Local History, particularly things associated with Victorian BDMs etc. There is NO COST to subscribe. See https://vafho.com/ 4. VAFHO also has a Facebook Page at https://www.facebook.com/VAFHO-Victorian-Association-of-Family-History-Organisations-853001631548704/ or just search for VAFHO on Facebook 5. Don't rush out and start Facebook Pages to replace Rootsweb Mailing Lists - there are already numerous Facebook Pages doing the same as the equivalent Rootsweb Mailing List and we don't want to re-invent the wheel particularly when there may be local Family History or Local History Groups with a Facebook Page. Remember they are volunteers also and we don't want to damage all the hard work they've already done. 6. If you are comfortable using Facebook, have a look at the Victoria AU Family History Facebook Page - they are really helpful ... https://www.facebook.com/groups/650071871717390/ or just search for VICTORIA AU Family History in Facebook. You can then JOIN that page and participate. 7. And finally remember the wonderful community spirit that has been such an important part of our Rootsweb Mailing Lists. Let's use that spirit to continue to help those with questions to ask. 8. You might want to print out this page for future reference when you have a chance to clear your head and decide what you want to do. Regards ... 1. [BELLARINE] Rootsweb Announcement
    2. Susie Zada
    3. Hi Folks, I've copied and pasted a message that came out this moring....... ==================================================================== [ROOT-LO-ANNOUN] RootsWeb Mailing Lists RootsWeb Administration rwmailinglists@ancestry.com via rootsweb.com 04:36 (1 hour ago) to rootsweb-listowners-announcements Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state. Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb. As an alternative to RootsWeb Mailing Lists, Ancestry message boards are a great option to network with others in the genealogy community. Message boards are available for free with an Ancestry registered account. Thank you for being part of the RootsWeb family and contributing to this community. Sincerely, The RootsWeb team ======================================================= Sadly that appears to be the end of our wonderful Rootsweb Mailing Lists. Some had become more active over the last months and others really hadn't had any posts for months and sometimes for more than a year. Naturally they recommend the use of Ancestry message boards - but that requires registering with Ancestry and potentially being bombarded with Ancestry subscription messages. For those comfortable with using Facebook that is potentially another alternative - just search Facebook for your area of interest. In its heydey, Rootsweb Mailing Lists were a wonderful resource for getting help - I do hope that people remember that generosity and friendship and helps others on Facebook too. Thank you everyone for being part of a wonderful period in our past - you all contributed to the Mailing Lists and helped others - keep this spirit intact! Regards ... Susie Zada - soon to be former Rootsweb Mailing List administrator.

    1. [BELLARINE] Memorial Service for Joan Hunt
    2. Susie Zada
    3. Memorial Service for Dr Joan Elizabeth HUNT The Memorial Service for Joan Hunt will be held this Thursday 20th September at 12 noon at the Ballarat Mechanics Institute, 117 Sturt Street, Ballarat. BRING YOUR SOCIETY'S BANNER This suggestion has been put to Gary and his response was "yes most definitely". It will be a wonderful way of showing just how much Joan helped groups around our State. If you know of any group that won't be at the Memorial Service but they have a banner, ask if you can take their banner. It would be great if we can have as many banners as possible displayed around the room at the Memorial Service. Regards ... Susie Zada

    1. [BELLARINE] Support the Bellarine Historical Society
    2. Susie Zada via
    3. Hi Folks, I've started a POLL on the Geelong & District Blog to support the Bellarine Historical Society in its application for a grant to digitise the former Shire of Bellarine Rate and Valuation Books. As you know, some of us have worked hard to ensure most of the Rate Books for former councils in our region have now been digitised - ironically we haven't yet been able to get the Shire of Bellarine ones done. And don't think it just relates to people who lived here - do you know how many people from across Victoria had properties in Ocean Grove in the early years! It was full of Ballarat, Bendigo and Western Districts people. Support our cause - it just takes a click to vote. http://geelonganddistrict.com/2014/10/07/digitising-shire-of-bellarine-rate- books/ Thank you in anticipation ... Susie Zada
