Who raised her after her mother died? (eg. was she adopted/fostered, raised by mothers or fathers family etc?) I hate to say it but as your grandmother would have been too young to remember she would only be repeating what she was told, there is always the chance her mother never died but gave her up when she was born (possibly married and went on with her life) Trying to 'skip' a generation to match up records is never easy and not very often successful. It would be better to start with your grandmother and work backwards. I remember on another post you stated her birth was never registered and to be honest (again) that just doesn't ring true. Chances are she was just not born with the SURNAME (or name) she is using. Knowing who raised her might give you some clues to find what you are looking for.
