I can only find one Joseph Ambrose Smith born in Poplar, London in 1847, though the mother's name is Sophia Wright. As Mary Brown put her father's name down as Henry when she was first married and John when she married again and her place of birth as NSW on one certificate and Wangaratta on the next, I gather there were a lot of errors made in years gone by! Joseph states he is a bachelor when he marries Mary in 1895 and that would tie in with the Joseph Ambrose Smith born in Poplar joining the 6th Dragoon Guards when he was 20 years and 10 months old when he joined in 1868 and served 21 years. His discharge on his service papers appears to have taken place in India when he was transferred to the 5th Lancers so my guess is that he somehow got to Australia from there, by legal or illegal means.
