I have a copy of the marriage certificate and the same witnesses signed for three in a row, so don't think they were friends. Joseph's occupation was Iron Worker, Mary's "machinist". Mary has her father down as John Brown, station manager and mother's maiden name as Annie Boyd. Present and usual residence Richmond for Mary and South Melbourne for Joseph. Joseph died in 1897 at Rutherglen and Mary remarried, John Foote, in 1900 - I have a copy of that certificate too.
