    1. [AUS-VIC] Further to my query regarding deaths of babies
    2. Valerie
    3. Again, thank you to those who so kindly wrote back, I did today call several places and feel perhaps it is worth while to follow up on a few things. There is no knowledge of the babies within our family, apart from one person hearing some mention of adoption, both babies were full term and both were pronounced dead two days after being born and they were born roughly two years apart. It is intriguing, but probably if adoption did occur very hard to trace. I am appreciative of the help and suggestions sent to me by listers. As may have been gathered, the woman in question is my mother, the babies were never mentioned in her lifetime to me, this may have been due to it being such a traumatic happening and very hard to talk about, or that somehow records might just have been changed and the babies adopted. A long shot, but I feel I need follow it further. One agency was kind enough to provide some links so shall follow up with those. How sad those times were for young women who gave birth outside marriage, no options for them, all very sad. Kindest regards and many thanks. Vee

    3. Vee, all the best with your search. There was no social security back then and if family was unable to help out as well as when the Mother went to have the child if in a unmarried mothers home, it was highly pushed to the mothers to adopt the children out. Again these things were not talked about. My brother was adopted by my parents in 1962, the mother had no choice as family were unable to help her. Was very sad and very much hush hush in the early years. Girls now are so much luckier in that they can get support to help keep their babies.
