I have William Alexander Smith's war records and it is on his Army papers that he names his mother as Mary Foote, not Mary Smith. Lovely to find the article through Trove - I hadn't seen that before. Mary is a mystery to me which is why I am asking for help! On her marriage certificate to Joseph Ambrose Smith in 1895 she states she is a spinster and no children are referred to. On her marriage to John Foote in 1900 she is a widow with 1 male child. I have not found any children from her marriage to Foote. On Joseph Ambrose's death certificate, it states he was married to Mary Brown and there were the 3 children, Bertie, Edith and Alexander (William Alexander), yet in the article you found, William Alexander is quoted as her only son.... The different addresses I have for Mary Foote are taken from William Alexander Smith's Army records where the last address is "Lakes Entrance, Bairnsdale" and I believe she moved there from Warrandyte.
