I now have a birth certificate of her sister and it clearly shows Mary (unregistered) so I am happy with that direction. On Joseph Ambrose Smith's death certificate, in 1897, it states he had been in the colony of Victoria for 8 years, which ties in nicely with him being discharged from the Army in 1889, probably when he was still in India with the 6th Dragoon Guards and 5th Lancers. I cannot find him on a passenger list - would there have to be a record if he came in by boat from, say India, or could he just jump on a ship and go? His death certificate also shows him married to Mary, nee Brown and having 3 children in total, Bertie, 7 years, Edith 5 years and Alexander 4 years. Alexander or William Alexander was my grandfather but I can't find a birth registration for any of these children. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
