Perhaps the dates work in with what you have said above and transport between Melbourne and Tasmania was active at this time. Around the 50's would have been at the start of gold being found in Beechworth and when numbers started to swell. The other KNOWLES is John, aged 78 years, who was buried as a pauper on 24/5/1879 in the Roman Catholic Area. Terry's details are as follows but be aware that the Cemetery trust asks a donation. Well I suppose they need some funding to keep up the cemetery grounds so it is not all lost as the only other means of funding is from donations and I am not sure people are that generous. Terry Walsh JP Secretary Beechworth Cemetery Trust Tel: 03 5728 2454 Mob: 0429 866 256 Email: [email protected] Mail: PO Box 248 Beechworth VIC 3747 Please note that the Victorian Dept of Health has approved the following schedule of fees for searches of burial records - $20 for the initial search, and $10 per individual name search thereafter. The Beechworth Cemetery Trust is prepared to waive payment of the fee if the initial search is straightforward and takes minimal time and effort. However, if the search is more complicated, or if follow-up information is sought, the Trust reserves the right to seek a fee before continuing the search. Re Lancashire - thanks for this tip as most records I came across were York and I could make no connection. My ancestor in the UK is a little puzzling as I have two birth locations, Kent and Jersey Island the latter providing no clues at all. Let me know if I can help with anything else. Cheers....Jennifer I trust this has been of some help to your family research. Regards, Terry Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
