    1. [AUS-VIC] John Kelly and Edward Kelly

    3. Dear all, Further to my previous email... some more details on what I'm searching for in general... I'm researching my gx2-grandfather, Edward KELLY, and his father John KELLY. Apparently Edward was born in Geelong on the 7th February 1859 (according to his London police employment record). But my searches came up with no records for his birth (either in the Victoria online records, NSW records, or local history records). Edward Kelly was in Australia until September 1882, possibly later. And he was in London in early 1883, because he joined the London Police force on 21st May 1883 aged 24. His London Police employment record says is that his previous occupation was as a Sailor - we think he worked his way from Australia to England on a boat - rather than being able to afford to pay for the journey. He had 2 tattoos on his arms, which I believe he could have got while at sea - as I think this was common in those days. My great-aunt told me that he'd told her lots of stories when she was a child about his adventures as a sailor travelling from Australia to England - apparently he worked his passage back from Australia on a 'wind-jammer' - a sail boat. Edward's father was John Kelly, a tin miner from Cornwall (details on Edward's 1st marriage certificate, and from family stories). Edward Kelly's second marriage certificate (in England) says his father was John Kelly, occupation: Gold mine manager. I wonder if he came to Australia in the Gold rush? I found an emigration record for a John Kelly who went from Cornwall to New South Wales in 1850 (on a ship called the Lord Stanley). He was married (to Mary) with 3 children (John, Mary, Caroline). On this ship record it says they were Primitive Methodists. When Edward married he was Roman Catholic - I'm not sure whether he could have been born into a Methodist family and changed later, when arriving in England and falling in love with a Catholic? I'm trying to find out if this John and Mary were my Edward Kelly's parents. They emigrated around the right time and could have had more children on arriving in Australia. I just need to find a link - so really trying to find a birth record for my Edward to show that they are his parents. But having no luck so far. If you can help that would be great. But it is like a needle in a haystack! I might be able to help you in return with some England look-ups or info. Thanks, Emily
