I've just started looking into this, following on from some work (lots of letters and notes I haven't looked at in detail) my father Ian did some years ago. The combination of 'gold fever' and poor circumstances do sound like the most likely reasons for the emmigration. Follow up question. All the brothers eventually settled in the Terang/Warrnambool area, and certainly Robert and Benjamin appeared to do quite well. Elijah (my GG GrFthr), may not have been as successful, and his son Robert (my G GrFthr) eventually moved to Preston (Melbourne). I'd be interested to know the circumstances regarding this move, given that other than son Elijah, the other siblings remained in the Terang area. Any information or sources would be appreciated.
