I suspect the boys may have heard of the goldrush in Victoria, rampant at the time. Benjamin's obituary suggests this too...see the Camperdown Chronicle of 19 Jan 1887, page 2, at NLA Trove newspapers site. It also states that Benjamin was 'brought up in the profession of a sailor', born 1819 in Suffolk. Also lots on Robert Wm, and some on Elijah. Enjoy!
