Fowler that was written on the book, could be like a teacher of some sort during the confirmation/communion that he/she given the book to May Wright when May Wright was confirmed in 1915, and there were no sons by the way from Thomas William Henry Holmes, my grandmother's father.... only two daughters from when he married Blanch Emily Peregalli, Gladys Sylvia Marian Holmes, and Haidee Violet Blanche Holmes..... It's too hard and time consuming for people to try and trace every possible May/Doris WRIGHT that might/might not fit the profile. The records here on Ancestry don't cover the years you require for VIC and chasing a name Australia wide (without any other connecting info) is not reasonable. You really need to have VIC BDM do a full search using her birthdate and providing whatever other information they require, so that you can try and work out one way or another what has happened. Even ask VIC BDM for a search of possible deaths of her mother in Aug 1927 (using just first name or surname and the date). Atleast then you would have some idea what is true and what is family story. The Book of Prayers which has May WRIGHT written in it. Does that have any 'clue' as to where it came from? eg. any clue if it was given to May in England or Australia or any other information? Author: Sad_Mushroom Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.oceania.australia.vic.general/11673.1.1.1.1.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi, Thanks for that. A few issues though....By 1927 birth and death registration was ABSOLUTELY compulsory. There would be no way for the hospital to hide the birth and absolutely no way to hide a death as a death certificate would have been needed for a burial and I doubt they just buried her in the backyard. I'd say the Private Medical Clinic would have actually been a hospital for unwed mothers. Does the baptism record state a mothers name and/or place of birth etc? Has your grandmother ever applied to VIC BDM using the date given on her baptism record and the place of birth etc or even her mothers name to have a search done for a birth with possible name variants? ((This is totally different than applying for a birth cert using exact details. When applying for a birth cert using exact details ONLY a search for those exact details is carried out)) If her mother died and could not register the birth it may have been recorded by the hospital or by Thomas and might not be the name she is using now. Even though the family may have done everything to hide the affair they could hardly convince the Government/Registrar/Hospital Board/Doctors and the Law to hide all traces just to hide an affair (especially when the father was going to take home the child and raise her anyway) Did Thomas have any sons old enough to be the father? Was pretty common for grandparents to raise grandchildren as their own. As we cannot access births for 1927 in VIC especially for people still living, you would need your grandmother to apply for a search to be done. Explaining there might be a name change/registration issue and using the baptism record might be your best chance at finding the truth. There doesn't appear to be a death reg for May WRIGHT in 1927 but there are marriages in 1929 and 1933 for Doris May WRIGHT's that might be connected. Author: Rutila_Washburn Surnames: Wright Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.oceania.australia.vic.general/11673.1.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: hi, she was raised by her father Thomas William Henry Holmes. My grandmother does have a baptismal record that has her birth date 10 Aug 1927. but no birth record, since she was born in a private medical clinic or centre, where they probably didn't bother to keep any birth/death records when she was born and when the mother died, since the family was doing everything they can to keep the affair of Thomas W. H. Holmes and May Wright a secret and since it was a shame to the family. and my grandmother's stepsisters from what I heard, destroyed everything they can of records and such of May Wright. and the only evidence that we have for May Wright, is of her book of common prayers that my grandmother still has, that had writing on the first page "May Wright from W. Fowler, May 1915" and the May 1915, gave us kind of a clue that that was the year of her communion and that May Wright would have been born by 1899. and that there's only one painting of my grandmother's mother that's at my grandmother's house, that her father Thomas had it made from an original photo that Thomas kept, meaning that Thomas must have cared for May Wright after she died.... and I just for some reason feel confident that this May Doris Wright could be the right one after looking at so many possible May Wrights on Ancestry.com Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: Sad_Mushroom Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.oceania.australia.vic.general/11673.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi, Apart from memories or family stories what documentation do you have in regards to your grandmother? Who raised her after her mother died? (eg. was she adopted/fostered, raised by mothers or fathers family etc?) I hate to say it but as your grandmother would have been too young to remember she would only be repeating what she was told, there is always the chance her mother never died but gave her up when she was born (possibly married and went on with her life) Trying to 'skip' a generation to match up records is never easy and not very often successful. It would be better to start with your grandmother and work backwards. I remember on another post you stated her birth was never registered and to be honest (again) that just doesn't ring true. Chances are she was just not born with the SURNAME (or name) she is using. Knowing who raised her might give you some clues to find what you are looking for.
