How did you piece this together as a family group? Can we be sure this is the Henry Brown from Canada and the Annie Boyd, born in Scotland and married in Ballarat in 1861? I will get a copy of Ellen Isabella's birth certificate and see where that leads me. Best regards, Jane. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Someone else has come up with Annie and Alexander, preceeded by Ellen Isobella, b1871 and followed by an unregistered Sarah in 1868, so I guess I'm trying to find an unregistered Mary in 1870. Still trying to verify the Canadian Henry Brown and Scottish Annie Boyd, married in Ballarat in 1861 are the parents of 'my' Mary Brown! I have discounted the NSW Browns for the time being at least. Annie - birth registered Ballarat 1862 - died 1898 Melbourne - married Smart. Alexander - birth registered Rutherglen 1865- died Wangaratta - married Crabb. Ellen Isabella/Isobella Ellen - birth registered Belvoir/Wodonga 1871 - married O'Keefe, Bryan and Plum, died 1947 R.Park. Unregistered - Sarah 1868 - died 1947 Coburg - married Chandler. Have you thought of purchasing birth certificate for Ellen Isabella - it should show all previous children and hopefully Mary is listed. Henry appeared to have been employed by the Railways - there used to be a fiche of an Index to Victorian Railway Employees which should give his various workplaces and when/if he left the service. Author: janemaryglenn Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.oceania.australia.vic.general/11690/mb.ashx Message Board Post: My greatgrandmother, born Mary Brown in c1870, was married twice, first to my greatgrandfather, William Alexander Smith in 1895 and then to John Foote in 1900. On her first marriage certificate she states she was born in Wangaratta, resides in Richmond and was a machinist. Her Father was John Brown, station manager and her mother Annie Brown, nee Boyd. On her second certificate she states she was born in NSW, resides at Kyora, her Father was Henry Brown, contractor and her mother Annie Brown, nee Boyd. I am confident this is the same Mary Brown, a widow with one living male child (my grandfather) when she married for the second time. I cannot find a birth certificate for Mary Brown after an extensive search but have found a Henry Brown born in Ascot County of Sherbrooke, Canada, marrying an Annie Boyd, born in Glasgow, Scotland, marrying in Ballarat in 1861. Henry is described as 37 years old, a bachelor, a carpenter, living in Sturt Street, Ballarat West; Father Henry ! Brown, carpenter mother Mary Lawrence Davies. Annie is a spinster of 21, a servant, also living in Ballarat West. Her Father is named as Hugh Boyd and her mother's maiden name is Anne Cameron. How can I verify that these are the parents of Mary Brown who married my grandfather? Any help would be appreciated. Still looking for a year that William Alexander Smith came to Australia, between 1889 and 1895. Thanks a lot everybody - this is such fun! Author: janemaryglenn Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.oceania.australia.vic.general/11682.2.1.1.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi Mary, Thank you for your help with this. John Smith and Sophia Wright can be found on the 1841 and 1851 census at 53 High Street, Poplar, London, with various children. Joseph appears first as a 3 year old in 1851 then in 1861, Sophia and Joseph are visitors at Catterson Smith's residence (Catterson Smith , born 1830, son of John and Sophia Smith, shown in 1861 as a widower with 2 children of his own). I am assuming John Smith, who was a draper, died between 1851 and 1861 though I am still looking for a death certificate. In military records, we have Joseph Ambrose joining the 6th Dragoon Guards in 1868, giving his sister Emma as next of kin. As you can see, I have quite a lot of information about this Smith family but am trying to confirm that this Joseph Ambrose is the same one that married Mary Brown in Australia in 1895. Joseph's military record is not easy to translate (handwriting and ageing documents) but my interpretation is that he was discharged in 1889 after 21 yea! rs of service and that is when I lose him. I have Joseph and Mary's marriage certificate and he states he is a 48 year old bachelor, born in London, parents John Smith, Merchant and MARY, nee Wright. It is the name MARY that cause me to doubt it is the same family, although I know it is possible for children to get their parents names wrong - for example, Mary put her father down as Henry Brown on one marriage certificate and John Brown on the next and I am confident it is the same Mary Brown, complete with signature. I cannot find when Joseph Ambrose Smith either left England or India (where he was last with the 6th Dragoon Guards) and arrived in Australia and that is my sticking point. Any suggestions would be gratefully received! One pointer was that Joseph's death certificate may have stated "time in colony" but it doesn't. I am awaiting Joseph Ambrose Smith's birth certificate from England (frustrating that I can't view and download online but there you are) which! may throw some light on Sophia/Mary Wright. I can only find one Joseph Ambrose Smith born in Poplar, London in 1847, though the mother's name is Sophia Wright. As Mary Brown put her father's name down as Henry when she was first married and John when she married again and her place of birth as NSW on one certificate and Wangaratta on the next, I gather there were a lot of errors made in years gone by! Joseph states he is a bachelor when he marries Mary in 1895 and that would tie in with the Joseph Ambrose Smith born in Poplar joining the 6th Dragoon Guards when he was 20 years and 10 months old when he joined in 1868 and served 21 years. His discharge on his service papers appears to have taken place in India when he was transferred to the 5th Lancers so my guess is that he somehow got to Australia from there, by legal or illegal means.
