That probably clears up Joseph's arrival. I have looked at other states for the birth of the children but it looks more likely that your statement of missing indexes from Victoria is the case as I can't find any evidence of the family being anywhere other than Victoria. Author: sallymurphyflynn Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.oceania.australia.vic.general/11698.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: When a passenger paid their own fare to Australia the government was not really interested in keeping passenger lists for them unlike convicts and people who had their fares paid to come here to work. Some passenger lists have been listed for Victoria on the PROV site. I cant find a number of my relatives arriving. If you can't find any births for the children then you need to look at other States. Although I do know that the indexes from Victoria are missing a lot of registrations. Perhaps if you go online to the Registrar of BDM for Victoria you may have more luck. This is a pay to view site but would b worth it just to check the indexes. Author: janemaryglenn Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.oceania.australia.vic.general/11699.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: The letter to my mother (who was in England) is from her "grandpa and grandma" and 'mummy and dad' They were the only grandparents my mother had in Australia and the last address I knew for my great grandmother was Lakes Entrance, via Bairnsdale (as next of kin to my grandfather when he was in the Army). Sadly, there is no name given for grandpa and grandma and nobody else living in the family who can tell me. At the time they wrote, it was a few weeks before Christmas 1954 and they were with my grandparents, Dymphna Jane and William Alexander Smith. The last address I had for Dymphna Jane was Quamby Avenue, South Yarra, in 1946 and she died in 1971 at Ballarat. I still can't find when William Alexander died, though I think it was after I was born (1953). John Foote died in Prahran which is where my grandfather lived at one time at 36 Donald Street. My suspicion is that Mary married again but I am struggling to find any record of this, or her death, which, if she marrie! d again, would have been in her new married name I presume. I would like to find when she died and where she is buried really. Thanks for your interest, Jane Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: fryerning Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.oceania.australia.vic.general/11699.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hoping I am understanding this......... Mary Brown b. 1870 m (1) Joseph Ambrose SMITH 1895. He died in 1897. (2) John FOOTE 1900........he died 1926 "...My great grandparents were alive in 1954 because I have a letter from them to my Mother in 1954, when they were living in Bairnsdale". Can you indicate how the substance of the letter suggests that it is from Mary and......a partner? Is this "great grandfather"........(partner of Mary) named, or only referred to? Might be useful to know who to look for. Where did John FOOTE die in 1926? Are other family members living in Bairnsdale.....Mary would be ~84 years old in 1954 so likely to have some family nearby? Author: janemaryglenn Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.oceania.australia.vic.general/11699/mb.ashx Message Board Post: My great grandmother was born Mary Brown in 1870 (parents Henry Brown and Annie Boyd - he was Canadian and she was from Glasgow in Scotland). She married my great grandfather, Joseph Ambrose Smith in 1895. He died in 1897 and she married John Foote in 1900. John Foote died in 1926 and I cannot find a trace of Mary Foote after that. I have looked at Mary Brown, Mary Smith and Mary Foote to see if she married again but the only likely candidate married a Biggs and died in 1895 but her birth year is given as 1895, so unless its a typo somewhere, its a dead end. My great grandparents were alive in 1954 because I have a letter from them to my Mother in 1954, when they were living in Bairnsdale. Initial enquiries of the Bairnsdale area shows no Foote in the telephone books. Any help or advice would be appreciated! Author: janemaryglenn Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.oceania.australia.vic.general/11698/mb.ashx Message Board Post: In earlier threads I was still trying to verify details of Joseph Ambrose Smith's wife Mary. I now have a birth certificate of her sister and it clearly shows Mary (unregistered) so I am happy with that direction. On Joseph Ambrose Smith's death certificate, in 1897, it states he had been in the colony of Victoria for 8 years, which ties in nicely with him being discharged from the Army in 1889, probably when he was still in India with the 6th Dragoon Guards and 5th Lancers. I cannot find him on a passenger list - would there have to be a record if he came in by boat from, say India, or could he just jump on a ship and go? His death certificate also shows him married to Mary, nee Brown and having 3 children in total, Bertie, 7 years, Edith 5 years and Alexander 4 years. Alexander or William Alexander was my grandfather but I can't find a birth registration for any of these children. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I had intended to update this forum with the latest news, but didn't get around to it until now as I hadn't received any responses. The search for Professor Parker and Annie Beaumont is largely unchanged, though - help from the other forum has confirmed that PP died at Walhalla but was buried at Toongabbie (I now have death certificate and inquest report), and there's been a later sighting of Annie Beaumont in 1896 in New Zealand, where she was performing with the Trilby Speciality Company (see 13 June 1896 issue of the Wangunui Chronicle). That's all that has been found so far. If I find any further information then I'll keep both forums updated. Steve Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. You mentioned on the other forum that he was buried in the Toongabbie cemetery and now you are assuming he was buried at Walhalla. Makes it a bit difficult for those of us who volunteer our time to help others with their family history research. It is possible that neither of them were using their 'real' names. Good luck :) Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
