The research made me so sad as so many of the Starr family were killed in the various wars mainly WW1, how awful. I'll be very interested to see what I can find on Charles with the whole sheep stealing business, and Maria too WHAT it will be interesting though. I don't know what is happening with the lists, a bit odd isn't it, so the message you put on the board which you thought I would see didn't come through??? 3. Sorry - my memory failed me a bit before - Matilda MANSER, b 1825 Kent - her parents were Thomas MANSER and Emma LAWRENCE- they arrived 1841 - the photo on Ancestry is of John Cook GOODA and it was Maria MANSER ( Matilda's sister ) who married the convict Stephen DEMPSEY. Matilda GOODA nee MANSER died November 1849 ...................................... >From a Tree on Ancestry: Eliza Gooda married Charles Bartier at St James Anglican Church, Pitt Town, N.S.W. They moved to Wallangra Station where Charles was a horse driver, labourer and carpenter. They also lived at Hickeys Plains. They then moved to Warialda where Eliza ran a hotel and Charles worked as a bridge builder. She was renowned for her knowledge of herbs. She was said to have treated some of the local bushrangers for gunshot wounds and consequently the hotel was safe from their attacks. She died at Warialda at the age of 46. The family left the hotel and the older girls kept house for their father while he continued his work building bridges ................................. Sorry about that - I am curious as to what happened to my time consuming research of this morning! You are welcome to email me directly as this should probably not be on the Vic List! Cheers Jocelyn

    3. Hi Dianna It seems you didn't get the message I sent this morning - aghhh- I spent quite a while on it as well- I wonder where it went..anyway.....to re-cap....( from memory) Charles who died 1860 - was a 14 day old baby born to James & Elizabeth STARR ( no relation)- I left a message on the Tree yesterday to let the owner know about the baby The brothers who went to Melbourne were also 'assisted migrants' which explains why they went there and at a different time to Charles ( Charles may have had to convince a few more people that he was worth the effort as well!!!)...assisted migrants were sort of 'chosen' by the benefactors usually. I think the Martha caught sheep stealing would be the mother Maria -it's a transcript from a film - I checked the papers and didn't see anything there, but if you can get to the NSW State Archives, you can order the film - maybe call them to find out - its probably why they moved to Temora..to get away from the shame maybe- also if Charles went to prison there should be a good description of him on the file - and possibly a photo Ancestry has a Tree with photos of John Cook MANSER and daughter Eliza and a couple of lovely stories- the family came out from Kent and were Methodists - Matilda's baptism is on LDS Familysearch - born 1825, Kent - her mother was Emma LAWRENCE b Sussex. Matilda's sister Eliza MANSER married a Stephen DEMPSEY, convict, who was killed in an accident and she re-married to Thomas CAGNEY Ann LOKER- you can find her birth etc on LDS - her parents were William LOKER ( 1789-1852 ) and Ellen nee PINK ( from another Tree on Ancestry ) who married Nov 1811 - Ellen died young and William re-married...her brother, Phillip Oxford Pink LOKER married at age 17, had children and he also emigrated to Victoria: Name: Phillip Looker Estimated Birth Year: abt 1824 Age: 29 Arrival Date: 4 Mar 1853 Arrival Port: Victoria, Australia Departure Port: London Ship: Duke Of Richmond Nationality: English and Welsh Name: Phil Looker Death Place: Geelong, Victoria Age: 80 Father's Name: Wm Looker Registration Year: 1903 Registration Place: Victoria Registration Number: 5833 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1823 There are some mentions for him in the papers as well:-))..you will find his Will and other relatives' on the PRO Vic site John STARR's parents were Thomas STARR & Elizabeth nee EVERETT b 1783. He had a sister Susan who married Nathan OAKMAN - she died 1907 in Foxton aged 86 - had a number of children Also - NSW and Victoria were separate colonies - so Charles' brothers may have still been in Victoria by late 1857 - Federation occurred 1901 .....:-)) Don't know if you scoured the newspapers for Jacob's sons death details - but Walter had married and had 2 sons ( Victor & Walter) - the families put in memorial notices for years. Very sad. I didn't have the marriage of Sophia Starr she was the one who married Henry James COURSE. As you see quite a few of the family came to Australia and I have been trying to connect all the dots here between the 4 brothers Charles, Jacob, Thomas, James and their sister Mary who married a Henry (George) Sargeant in Victoria. The John Starr you found the death for in Temora/Liverpool is Charles and Maria (Goody) Starrs son, he donated his body to the university in Sydney (or one of the unis) and was buried about 12 months later. STARR Charles - Wagga Wagga 29 May 1878 Sheep stealing Wagga Wagga 017 NRS 849 7 2760 & 2761 0299 STARR Martha - Wagga Wagga 29 May 1878 Sheep stealing Wagga Wagga 017 NRS 849 7 2760 & 2761( probably the son of Reuben & Jessie ) Was this information from the NSW Archives office, I would like to follow up on this, I will look on Trove as well just in case it is there. Yes the Martha Starr you found with father's name John is Charles' daughter I have that birth certificate here and she did eventually marry Edward Doyle. 3. HI Jocelyn Thanks, no I did not receive the message!!! I also posted a message on Rootsweb and it has not appeared from yesterday morning!! Okay so now I have to remember also what's been said (Oh Dear) Charles Starr died in 1860 (Where in Oz or UK) Mine died here in Temora NSW in 1897. This is a confusing one, Charles' marriage certificate has really thrown me off. Thanks for that Dianna

    3. Hi Dianna I sent an email to the list this morning but it hasn't appeared yet....did you happen to receive it? Let me know, and I'll re-post if necessary ( and try to remember it all)- the important bit was the charles STARR who died 1860 - he was a 14 day old baby born to James & Elizabeth STARR, so not your man at all- I posted a message to the Tree on Ancestry yesterday to let them know Cheers Jocelyn -----Original Message----- From: aus-vic-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:aus-vic-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of dianna charles Sent: Saturday, 11 August 2012 5:33 PM To: aus-vic@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [AUS-VIC] Charles Star/Starr birth HI Jocelyn Thanks so much for all of that, I cannot make head nor tail of this marriage certificate, I've never seen anything so confusing. There was a bit of confusion on the shipping record for the Charles Starr who arrived in NSW in 1857, it stated that he came from Foxton Kent, there is a Folkestone in Kent, but Foxton is in Cambridge. I was just told that someone found a tree on ancesty and they saw that a Charles Starr died in England and the parents were John Star and Ann Loker, so if he died in England, I must have a different one here. Just doesn't add up. All the information you have collated is correct for the Starr brothers and sister that came to Australia. Also the immigration papers said that Charles did not have any relatives in the colony this was at the end of 1857, the other supposed siblings arrived early in 1857 unless they were not speaking to each other or didn't know each others plans. Now I will try and find a Charles Starr born to a John Star and Mary or Ann Wright. And it was him doing the sheep stealing for heavens sake this collates with all the information I have for them living in the area of Temora, Sebastopol, Bagdad. Thanks so much for taking the effort and time to reply it is very much appreciated.
