I suspect the boys may have heard of the goldrush in Victoria, rampant at the time. Benjamin's obituary suggests this too...see the Camperdown Chronicle of 19 Jan 1887, page 2, at NLA Trove newspapers site. It also states that Benjamin was 'brought up in the profession of a sailor', born 1819 in Suffolk. Also lots on Robert Wm, and some on Elijah. Enjoy! Some further information that my grandmother (Elsie Napthine(Pearson)) collected in about 1980 .. R.W. Napthine, of Warrnambool, is a native of Suffolk, England and was for 5 years with John Charles Crampin? , draper of Saxmundham (Suffolk), and afterwards engaged for 4 years in London. He arrived in Melbourne in Oct 1852 and was engaged by Charles Williamson, 47 Collins St. with whom he remained until 1854, when he went to Warrnambool per sailing vessel (the fare being 6 pounds) and purchased land in Timor St. in conjunction with Mr Tom Briggs, and commenced business under the style of 'Briggs and Napthine'. Mr Napthine was for some time connected with the hospital and mechanics institute of Warrnambool. He has now retired from active business and resides on his property 'Huntingfield' on the banks of the river Hopkins, Warrnambool Robert Napthine, one of the sons, married Jane Beasley (Beezley?) of Northcote, and married in the church in High St., which is still there. They had seven children .. Nelson?, Myrtle, Ivy, Ethel, Arthur, Arch and Ernest. Arthur Napthine and Elsie Pearson were married on the 9th Sept 1918 at St James Manse Fitzroy and had two sons Mervyn and Ian I'd be very interested to know the reasons why the 3 Napthine brothers emmigrated to Australia. Would you have any information on this? Thanks Gary Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. John Paul Scotland, Marriages, 1561-1910 marriage: 22 Jul 1825 High Church,?Paisley,?Renfrew,?Scotland spouse: Cathrine Fraser So it looks like the death cert had the wrong father's name.....mind you, William PAUL and John PAUL could have been brothers anyway! Especially as you will see both William and John had a son called Matthew So, if we carry this line of thought further, here is the family in 1841 ( I have looked at these records so many times, I almost know them off by heart): 1841 PAUL, John M 35 1806 Ag Lab Renfrewshire PAUL, Catherine 35 1806 Renfrewshire PAUL, John M 14 1827 Renfrewshire PAUL, Janet F 7 1834 Renfrewshire PAUL, William M 4 1837 Renfrewshire PAUL, Mathew M 2 1839 Renfrewshire Address: 103, George Street, Paisley County: Renfrewshire Civil parish: Paisley Martyrs and a lucky find-possibly related to above: PAUL, Margaret F 70 1771 Renfrewshire PAUL, Matthew M 30 1811 M S Renfrewshire MCDONALD, Janet F 25 1816 Renfrewshire Address: 113, George Street, Paisley A lot of work needs to be done on this family ( and I have spent ages on it already!)- they don't seem to be about in 1851 - although its possible Matthew stayed and married ..if so, there is a link to Robert AITKEN who married Margaret ( possibly Ogilvie but surely should be PAUL!) and a grandmother called Isabella PAUL b abt 1783 - ( found in 1861) - but I haven't been able to find this grandma in earlier censuses, which could mean yet another typo There is a Tree on Ancestry that has William & Agness's family - William's parents are given as Robert PAUL b 1765 and Janet GALBREATH b 1767 - married June 1789 in Middle Church Paisley- they had a lot of children-including a John b 26 Feb 1798..they also had a Matthew b 30 May 1808 William and Agness are still going strong in Paisley in 1871 No sign of John , Catherine or the other children in 1851- there is a John PAUL in 1851, farm labourer says born 1814 Paisley - on his own in Greenock Another possibility is that Jessie was born to Janet outside of wedlock and she went to Vic to start over - maybe the fellow she was a servant for banished her ( or his wife) and she met Archie in Melbourne after he arrived late 1852...that shipping record is the best fit for any AA arriving into Oz...maybe the bit about being 'born at sea' was to cover for the fact there is no birth certificate...so no father's name mentioned... you might find this interesting - its the rules for when the WAVERLEY docked! http://gazette.slv.vic.gov.au/images/1848/N/general/143-a.pdf I don't know how you can get to view the shipping record for Archie in 1852 - but it might throw some more light if you ( or someone) can get to see it Anyway, thats it from me - I think I have found the right family for you now, so good luck with your research Cheers Jocelyn Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: Fiona_crisp Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.oceania.australia.vic.general/10983.2.1.2.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Oh dear. I found the arrival of Archie many months ago when we were first starting out so now think that must be wrong. Since I first wrote the original post, we've found Janet's death certificates and some of her children's birth certificates which all say they were married in Sydney in 1851. I'm more inclined to believe the original documents are correct which would mean that we have the wrong Archie arriving into Melbourne in 1852. Bugger. I have already discounted the Janet that we found in 1841 - she doesn't seem to fit. We too have wondered if she married previously but she was still quite young when she did marry Archie - not that that matters I suppose. Then there is her death certifcate that states her mother was someone Fraser. Yes I think Jessie's age is a couple of years out. She's in George's (b 1854) birth certificate as being 18 months old so that ties in with her being born in 1852 - the other siblings BC's all show her age as if she were born in 1852. I'm actually in New Zealand not Australia but will let my mother know about the WHo do you think programme as she will be most interested. Will keep looking today for Janet and Archie - thanks again for your help! Fiona Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Poor Rupert though. re the marriage date - you said in one of your earlier posts the marriage may have been 1851 or 1852...so I thought it was an unknown...now you say 1851 - BUT- Archie arrived Nov 1852 into Port Melbourne...actually just checked your Tree - you have them married 1852 there- I'm pleased I was able to find the whole family in 1841 for you, confirming birth places and occupations for Archie's family - plus you can now add the other children I found there...plus we now know George was born in England Daughter Jessie - are you saying her age at death is recorded incorrectly? Also just had a look at your 1841 record for Janet - you will find that girl was still in Scotland 1851- she is with her father William PAUL.... 1851 PAUL, William Head Widower M 68 1783 Quarrier Erskine, Renfrewshire PAUL, Janet Daughter F 21 1830 Housekeeper Kilmalcolm, Renfrewshire Address: 2, Clune Brae Fleming's Land, Clune Brae Fleming's Land, Kilmacolm County: Renfrewshire Its interesting see that Janet's brother, Hugh, was also a carpenter - and disappears by 1851 and 1861: PAUL, William Head Widower M 78 1783 Labourer Erskine, Renfrewshire PAUL, Jannet Daughter Unmarried F 27 1834 House Keeper Kilmacolm, Renfrewshire Address: Clunebraehead, Kilmacolm So that leaves the shawl sewer - or the daughter of William and Agnes...one is missing from 1841 altogether - did that family emigrate I wonder...still can't be sure which one the shawl sewer belonged to! The only other family in Paisley in 1841, is this one - father William is in the same industry as George ANDERSON: PAUL, William M 30 1811 Cotton H L W J Renfrewshire PAUL, Ann F 30 1811 Renfrewshire PAUL, Robert M 15 1826 Cot H L W Ap Renfrewshire PAUL, Ann F 9 1832 D G Renfrewshire PAUL, Jean F 7 1834 Renfrewshire PAUL, John M 5 1836 Renfrewshire PAUL, William M 3 1838 Renfrewshire Address: 21, Broomlands Street, Paisley maybe Ann should be Agnes..the son Robert fits with baptism ah - found them again in 1851: PAUL, William M 48 1803 Hand Loom Weaver Cotton Paisley, Renfrewshire ANDERSON, Agness Wife F 45 1806 Hand Loom Weaver Cotton Saltcots, Ayrshire PAUL, Robert Son M 26 1825 L H Weavers Paisley, PAUL, Jean F 17 1834 Twiner Paisley, PAUL, William Son M 14 1837 Weavers Assist Paisley, PAUL, Margaret F 11 1840 Twiner Paisley, PAUL, Mary F 9 1842 Fring Twiner Paisley, PAUL, Mathew M 6 1845 Scholar Paisley, Address: 16, Maxwellton StreetCounty: Renfrewshire the family is still there 1861 - father is a silk weaver- Robert has left home...so ....sorry for the stream of consciousness....I think the Janet born to William & Agness, died young as no other child was farmed out to rellies etc..which leaves us with the shawl sewer....it would be good to check out Scotlands People really carefully for her birth. It also goes a way to believe the shawl sewer is the girl arriving 1848....but I needed to rule the others out properly, which I have now done at great stress to my eyes and only to find I was on the right track with my first discovery of her yesterday! What are the other clues you have that suggest she arrived before 1851? I might be able to confirm them ( apart from the 1848 record ( as I have seen that) I actually wondered if she had married before so not marrying with PAUL, but I have checked the Archie records and no one of that name married a Janet OK, thats enogh for now Cheers Jocelyn - PS the program ' Who do you think you are' is having a story on someone whose origins are weavers in Paisley..so you might like to catch that - SBS Tuesday night Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: Fiona_crisp Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.oceania.australia.vic.general/10983.2.1.2.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi Jocelyn We have several pieces of evidence that suggest Janet arrived earlier than 1852. She is an enigmatic charachter and we've even found a link to Stan Laurel of Laurel and Hardy fame! Anyway we have her death certificate and numerous children's birth certificates that all state she and Archibald were married in 1851 in Sydney. We think (pure assumption) that Jesse their daughter was born on a ship going between Sydney and Melbourne in 1852 as their next child, George (my ancestor) was born in Melbourne in 1854. We have no firm evidence to think that its Janet arrived in 1848 other than a gut feeling. We now know that her parents were William Paul and her mother someone Fraser - from Janet's death certificate where her mother's first name is down as unknown. We know Archibald was a joiner - he later is listed as a builder and owned several properties in the Melbourne area which were heavily mortgaged and left very little to poor Janet after his death. Their grandson Rupert Cuthbert was a vocalist ("a fine baritone")/ vaudeville star who married a May Charlotte Dalhberg. They both went seeking fame and fortune to the USA where they appeared to have separated and May has taken up with Arthur Stanley Jefferson. She was his common law wife from 1917 to 1925 and apparently was the one to convince him to change his name to Stan Laurel of Laurel and Hardy fame! Fascinating stuff! Many thanks for your help again and hope the above makes sense. Kind regards Fiona Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. My great grandfather Herbert Hedley married Gladys Alecia Rickleben/Reckleben in Palmerston North, New Zealand in 1904. Her father was Morice Rickleben, born Emerald Hill, Melbourne, Australia. His father was Frederick William Rickleben, born Magdeburg, Prussia. His mother was Elizabeth Shwerdfagen [Schwedfeger]according to New Zealand records. I have a Reckleben family tree for NZ and Australian branches of the family including mention of the Moogs. William Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
