Author: rosthompson Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.oceania.australia.vic.general/11004/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi there. I am looking for information on Timothy Kearns, born c1835, in Ireland. He went to Australia mid to late 1870s. I believe he ended up in Victoria. I think he may have lived in Kilmore, outside Melbourne. I have no idea where to trace him from there. Are there records available to search online? I am researching from Ireland. regards Ros Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Lloyds also sent me paperwork explaining some of the abreviations etc, it says the name of the ship is underlined on the document if the person named is the captain of the ship. TASSO is underlined??Bit confusing!! I have never come accros a ship yet that he is on the crew list as captain tho have seen him listed as engineer and am sure have seen him listed as chief mate I did read that Mr Herd was owner of the TASSO as well as captain Maybe Mr Herd was a partner of some kind? I also came accros another Alex McIntosh who was a master mariner but younger than my Alex, but as he never seems to be honest about his age, i cant totally discount him i suppose I have wondered if he really did die over in Oz in 1871 as there is no hint or clue to follow up on, maybe he just did`nt want to come home to Scotland with Sarah or why did`nt he go with her in 1867??? Divorce would`nt have been an option for them in those days, maybe they agreed to go thr separate ways The plot thickens Jocelyn lol!!! Work for me too today unfortunately :( Paula Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I found this in the NSW State Archives: MCINTOSH Alexander Athol Gardens Master Mariner 12/10/1878 14354 and this in the papers: Australian Town and Country Journal (NSW : 1870 - 1907) Saturday 22 December 1877 A valuable little addition has just been made to ¡the fleet of small steamers connected with the port, line new vessel is named the Eva, afine screw boat ¡built by Dunn, of North Shore, for Messrs McIntosh and Venus, proprietors of Athol Gardens. The Eva is 90 feet long and 10 feet beam; she has a fine roomy fridge amidships, and a beautifully fitted up cabin, ohe is moreover very fast, and upon her trial trip run over the mile at the rate of ll knots. The engines are high-pressure, having been constructed by Mr. Vale, of Pyrmont. ..... There is a report of the TASSO caught in a storm and all the horses it was shipping died- no mention of any crew The Sydney Morning Herald (NSW : 1842 - 1954) Monday 9 October 1871 .... re Alex's occupation - was he a master mariner or always a 'mate' of varying rank? Sarah said he was a Chief Mate in 1861...the TASSO had Capt HEARD for a number of years. Do you know what vessels he was actually captain of , if any? There are some very knowledgable helpful people on that List. You should post all his trips there- someone will be able to tell you which ports he was sailing from etc- and they may even know the history of the ships...in fact I have a subscription to the Gale Newspapers - so you could post the ships and dates here and I'll have a look in the old papers....sometimes we have to go back before we can go forward. I like to get a feel for the person I am researching which is why I usually do a lot of what others may think 'irrelevant research'..its surprising what I come up with even though I am never sure I will find anything Anyway, keep us posted Cheers Jocelyn Regards Jocelyn Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Oct 22, Dec24 lots of numbers and letters that dont make sense to me...not sure if he was in Borneo or the ship was named "Bonrneo" the next and last entry reads...TASSO, foreign,Jan 25, foundered Feb 12 which is underlined with 24 below the line which i believe means the ship was refloated 24th feb...cld have been just damage that was repaired...i dont know. I do know on the captains register he did go to mauritius on other occasions so maybe it was a "regular run" I dont have much to go on other than what james McIntosh has written but believe it was common place for miners to move around so it could be my Alex you have found...i need to dig a little deeper...you are so good at this....wish i was lol Thankyou again Paula Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
