Unfortunately I do not know where Foster Spencer Williams is buried. Annie Margaret Ashby is buried at the Kew Cemetery in Melbourne, single internment. I am currently investigating the other Williams family in St. Kilda to see if they are connected. Annie Ashby's death certificate states she died in Jervois Street, St. Kilda, the same street the other Williams family lived. Henry E. Williams appears to be the same person as Henry Gordon Williams. Henry was a photographer which is stated on his war records, Claude's will and in the Electoral Roll. I believe Amelia Gordon Williams is Henry's mother not sister. The war pension in Henry's war records lists Amelia as his mother although all other documentation says sister. I have traced Amelia's parents to Robert Williams and Margaret Gordon. Their children were Annie Baker Williams born 1861 St. Kilda, Reg. No. 1532. Amelia Ellen (Helen) Gordon Williams born 1863 Port, Victoria, Reg No. 1607. I found the death certificate of a Robert Baker Williams who died in 1919 St. Kilda, Victoria aged 54. Reg. No. 15078. His parents are listed as Robert Baker Williams and Margaret Gordon. Estimated birth year to be 1865. Electoral rolls in 1903 lists an Amelia Williams and two Robert Baker Williams', one a gardener and one a machinist, as living in 39 Jervois Street, St. Kilda. In the 1909 Electoral Roll only Amelia Williams and Henry Williams live at 39 Jervois Street, St. Kilda. In the 1914 Electoral Roll, Amelia Williams is listed as Amelia Helen Gordon Williams and Henry Williams as Henry Gordon Williams, 39 Jervois Street, St. Kilda. Claude Spencer Williams is my Great Uncle. His birth certificate has his name as Claude Spencer Ashby, illegitimate and I'm assuming he took on the name of Williams later in life. All the children of Annie Ashby have either father unknown or illegitimate on their birth certificates. I do know from my Grandmother Elsie Marie Williams (Claude's sister), that Foster Spencer Williams was considered their father. In 1903 Foster Williams lived at 38 Camden Street, St. Kilda and in 1909 lived at 4 Camden Street, St. Kilda. So although we find records with his residential addresses and signatures on Claude's war documents, I can find no trace of him either by a birth certificate or death certificate and Annie's death certificate states she was unmarried. I'm wondering if Foster Spencer Williams was known by another name? He is a mystery. I hope the above information might give some clarification. I was the fornunate recipient of 105 pages of the Hart line and a host a number of related family branches. Since then i have been expanding that knowledge. Are you aware of your connection to the Cohen family of Tasmania and NSW. That came about through the marriage of John Harts neice Mary to Joseph Cohen in Sydney on 2/10/1850. I have only started putting the family tree on Ancestry, but if you try http://hart1700.tribalpages.com/family-tree/hart, there are some 700 names. But if i could have your email address i could send you the the 105 pages i was given. If you want information on Johns first wife Isabella Behilah Levy, go into the Public Members Trees, put in John Hart and look for the Boyle family tree. You will find it fascinating. As the mother of adopted children, I know it is possible under the Freedom of Information Act to apply for the original birth certifcate which would have named your Mum's natural mother. Although my children have birth certificates naming my husband and me as their parents, the Registrar of Births Deaths and Marriages would be able to supply the ORIGINAL certiffcate to you in lieu of to your mother, given that she is deceased. And under the same Act the hospital would have to provide you with post and pre natal reports which would also name the birth mother. We did these things when my son wanted to obtain information about his birth mother. Hoping this will assist you. But in seeking details of your Mum's birth mother, who could be and probably is still alive, you must be mindful of respecting her privacy if you intend to attempt to contact her. I have been able to supply my son with his ancestral information relating to his birth family, and we have even obtained birth death and marriage certificates. The death certificates are particularly useful because they often provide information of possible genetic health problems. We discovered he had younger half-brothers, and made the mistake of contacting one, who had no knowledge of his existence, challenged his mother about him, and many tears were shed by her and them when she had no choice but to admit the truth of my son's birth and adoption. So think careful about possible consequences before you go ahead. Good luck. Val

Author: 1_randam Surnames: Williams, Ashby Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.oceania.australia.vic.general/11017/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am trying to find information about my Great Grandfather Foster Spencer Williams and Great Grandmother Annie Margaret Ashby. Foster died in Melbourne in 1923 and his partner Annie Margaret Ashby, died in Jervois St. St. Kilda, Victoria in 1901 from breast and lung cancer. There were six children Ivy May, Elsie Marie (my grandmother), Claude Spencer (died just after World War 1 in France from influenza, Linda Alice, Constance and Robert Leslie. The children take the surname Ashby on their birth certificates but later took the name Williams. It does not appear that Foster and Annie were married. I can't find a birth certificate or death certificate for Foster Spencer Williams although he is in the Electoral Roll in 1903 as living at 38 Camden Street, St. Kilda and in 1909 as living at 4 Camden Street, St. Kilda, Victoria. He may also have lived at 44 Greeves Street, St. Kilda as some of the children lived there in later years. Foster Williams was reputed to be a gold buyer and on occasion travelled to Kalgoorlie, Western Australia for that purpose. His employment in the Electoral Roll is listed as a Traveller and/or Commercial Traveller. Annie Ashby was born in Port Fairy, Victoria to a William Ashby and Catherine White, Catherine having immigrated from Bray in Ireland. Any information about Foster Spencer Williams and Annie Margaret Ashby would be much appreciated, Foster in particular as I can't find a birth or death certificate. She was born at Crown st women's hospital in 1942.
