Alice was my grandmother and she did die in the Lake Macquarie area before my mum Jill had her ashes placed at Springvale Vic. However, it appears that my mum Jill was not her biological daughter. Mum also spoke of a sister (half sister) Nellie Nicholls , but I never heard her mention Lima. Alice lived with us until her death. Whilst I see someone has put her death as being 1970 I was thinking it was more 1972 when I was 10 years old...but who knows, maybe I was 8. Author: rosthompson Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.oceania.australia.vic.general/11004.2.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi there His cousin was John Kearns, but spellings for both men could vary hugely. As Timothy doesn't seem to have been the most reliable character, it is possible he moved around for work. He never contacted his family in Ireland again, so it is possible he re-married in Australia. Working on his sons army records in the 1880s and 1890s, they list each other and their mother as next of kin, but in the census of 1901 it is the first time she describes herself as a widow. It is possible that his death cert may not have his parents name on, which would make it more difficult to trace. Thanks a million for your help Ros Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. There are Timothy Kearns in Victoria at the time but I have not found a death that fits. If you use a search engine and look for "Victorian Birth death and Marriages" may be you might find his death. Australia does not keep census but do have election rolls. None show a Timothy in Kilmore but there are some elswhere in Vic. Do you have the name of the cousin? may be they might be easier to find? If he was not living with family who would know the names of his parents to put on his death certificate? Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: rosthompson Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.oceania.australia.vic.general/11004.2.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi there, thank you for the reply. I have not linked my Kearns with Avoca, which is about an hour away from where Timothy lived. I have his marriage cert in 1859, and the birth of his 5 children between 1860 and 1873. After this he dissapears off the radar. Family legend has it that he went to Australia to meet a cousin who was a constable there (he had gone out in the 1840s). Timothy was supposed to earn the fares for his wife and children by working in the gold mines but unfortunately they never heard from him again. A letter from a neighbouring family who had also emigrated there led his family in Ireland to believe he was still alive in this region to at least 1900. Author: JONESHAW Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.oceania.australia.vic.general/11004.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: My husband's Kairns came out to Victoria Aus. They came from Avoca, Wicklow, ireland, but on their papers i Ireland their name was Kearn but on the boat it was Kairn and by the time the next generation got married it was Kairns. On the wedding certs were signed with a cross so it depended on who filed out the papers to how their name was spelt. Any way I have Michael Kearns son of William Kearns and Susanna Pritty. born 1825 Avoca, Wicklow. I have found 5 brothers and sisters for him but no Timothy. Nor have I followed any other family to Australia. This family lived in Bendigo less than an hour from Kilmore and Michaels son Daniel married a girl from Kilmore even closer to Kilmore. Look in the wicklow records and if you can connect them then I can help you from Victoria. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Their daughter Rachel Hart (1870-1958) married Thomas Peter Lloyd (1857-1927). Happy to exchange information if they are connected to your family. Regards, Barbara Corrigan.
