I hope you buy it! That was great news about Alice as well- I was worried she had died as there has been nothing in the records and I have to confess I haven't read all the articles carefully - just grabbed what I could find Charles and Grace definitely separated - Grace said she was married in 1911- was the article after 1911 about Charles and wife in a play? I found earlier ones....they state the Theatre companies they were with on the Ellis Islands records, so you might like to look at that to see when they changed companies. I searched US records in the hope Grace ran off to live there but nothing appears. I wonder if she changed her name after the separation - he was a bigger star than she was and there was a lot of shame with marriage breakdowns in those days. So now we have to find Alice...and work out who Olive DUDLEY belonged to...but that will have to be another day You can join your local library and get access to the Gale newspapers ( Times and all the old newspapers)( check they have access to it) and heaps more - and search them from home...also the New York Times is online - CC features more often than Grace..if I get a minute I will try some of the other papers We did well from your initial inquiry didn't we!! but you didn't say if there is a family resemblance! I suspect she took after her Irish ancestors with that colouring:-)) Cheers Jocelyn Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I am taking up so much of your time, I feel quite bad about it. I did find a bit about Charles Cherry this morning, saying that he appeared in two plays in 1915 and 1916, in the US, and also that he appeared on Broadway, together with his wife Grace. But, that is all that I've managed today. Life is getting in the way. Oh, and I looked at the National Archives and could not find a divorce for Charles and Grace, so maybe I was wrong. What made me think that this was the case was the fact that Charles said he was single on the passenger list in 1907. They did travel a lot. Yes, I found the long report on the Pierse family very interesting too, and saw that the name Dudley was misspelt. I have been trying to find a picture of Grace to see it there is any family resemblance, but no luck so far.At least now I know how tall she was and the colour of her hair. May I ask you how you managed to find the old Times articles? The information that you have given me is all very valuable. It's going to keep me busy for a long time to come. Thanks very much, Sue Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Limerick, where he met and later married Miss Johanna O'Brien, eldest daughter of Pierce O'Brien and his wife Johanna, née de Lacy of nearby Templeglantin. He was then in his early 30s and Johanna O'Brien was probably a few years his junior. It should be noted that the info about Kathleen PIERSE is a tad incorrect- I have found her marriage to John James CROKER 1866 in Otahuhu Auckland - he was born Cornwall but lived in Devon - he was a printer by trade ( I think he arrived OZ 1859) and soon after his marriage thought he would make an excellent cattle dealer- shipping animals around NZ - the couple had moved to Wanganui NZ, but shortly after JJC went bankrupt owing 5000 quid- there is quite a bit in the NZ ' Paperspast' website about him...he died in Vic OZ. Later, his father also emigrated to OZ. .............. record in UK archives: [no title] MS 11936/559/1261052 8 November 1837 Contents: Insured: William Fitzmaurice Pierse, 17 Princes Street Spital Fields, superintendent of police ............ In 1925, Lady Emily CHERRY wrote to the Times saying that the Malcolm CHERRY who died was not her son. Her son Charles CHERRY, who was playing in ' The Pelican' at the Ambassador Theatre was yachting in the Mediterranean .................. Just wondering where you got the info Charles & Grace nee DUDLEY divorced....Grace appears in the Times up to 1906 and then nothing after that ......I found Charles attending an Actor's Benevalent Fundraiser in Feb 1931- just before he died..he was with the likes of Sybil Thorndike and Philip Snowden! ............... Found the death notice ( Times) for Charles CHERRY 31 Aug 1931 - died suddenly of Angina Pectoris, only son of Lady Emily and the late James Frederick CHERRY. Service at Brookwood Crem, Woking. New York and Montreal papers please copy On 01 Sep 1931, notice that cremation had been postponed - to be advised the next day. No flowers by request 02 Sep - cremation that day ...................... I always thought that Margaret was actually originally from Dublin. I found a marriage notice in the Sydney Morning Herald from 30 November 1848 which refers to her father being Andrew Field, of Sydney, late of Henry Street, Dublin. "On the 16th instant, at Melbourne, Port Phillip, at the Church of St. Francis by the Rev. Dean Coffee, Mr. James Doyle of the county of Wexford, Ireland, brother to the Rev. Thomas Doyle of New Ross [Ramsgrange] in the same county and relative of the late Right Rev. Dr. Doyle, Catholic Bishop of Kildare and Leighlin [pretty sure this is not correct] to Margaret Isabel, second daughter of Mr. Andrew Field of Sydney, late of Henry-Street Dublin and god-daughter of the Lord and Lady Ventry, Birwan House, County Kerry, Ireland [again not sure if this is true?]" James was born in Tombrick, Newtownbarry (now known as Bunclody), Co. Wexford. I don't know when he left Ireland and/or arrived in Australia. I am his great-great nephew. I also found reference to James being landlord of the Cerberus Hotel, Morris St., Williamstown in 1877. Noel Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Sorry to have taken so much of your time. Walter's father was a butcher too. I really cannot understand why he called himself a gentleman in the 1851 census. No wonder he didn't want to marry Mary Ann Love, he wanted someone more upper-classed. Funny, Lilla's eldest daughter was like that too. Marion O'Brien Dudley returned to England and died in Camberwell in 1895, that is all I have so far. As for daughter Alice, no, I don't know yet, but will definitely try to find out. It seems that there's nothing on Ancestry about her. It seems that Grace and Charles divorced before 1907. I will have a look at the National Archives. Obviously you have been researching for sometime. I would be more than happy and very appreciative of any info you have. Funny...I didn't know that mum wrote a letter asking for John cutts medals. That would be really interesting to see. Cheers Jenny Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. If Arthur John in later life wanted to access veterans entitlements there might be a notation on his army file recording the name change. It might be worth getting the record file from National Archives?. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Their father was Kenneth Snr. I am fairly sure Donald was named after the Kenneth Snrs brother Donald and that this Donald is the Donald in your post below. I would love to share info - look forward to your response Thanks Amber Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
