There has always been a belief true or otherwise that they were from Inverness. Catherine was born on the 4th May 1929 in Aharacle, Argyle. Although on her fathers death certificate from Victoria in 1891 it shows two Catherines, whether this date refers the Catherine in Victoria i'm not sure but it fits with the age at her marriage and death. The family is believed to have come out to Australia around the 1850 mark as he married again in 1854. His wife Catherine died in 1848. He had a sister Ann who married a Donald McPherson and who was a witness to his second marriage to Margaret Kerr. I've spent the last couple of hours ploughing through all my notes and there's nothing whatever to say she was born in Yan Yean; I must have mistranscribed something long ago. Sorry to have misled anyone. In fact her death certificate (which I've hastily bought to fill this sudden gap) says she was born in Inverness, had been 62 years in Victoria (so from about 1851) and married James Johnstone in Melbourne at 22 (also about 1851). Eleven children are listed. Apologies again for my error. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. The McMillan-McPherson marriage cited here for 1826 may well be the correct one. But the Catherine McMillan in the original post seems to have been born in Yan Yean (a hamlet 30 miles north of Melbourne) about 1828 and died there, 8.8.1912. She married James Johnstone, also of Yan Yean. I doubt her brother was born back in Scotland the next year. Note that the mother of the John McMillan mentioned was a McKenzie, not a McPherson. Maybe more than one Donald McMillan in town? And more than one John, but not in the same hemisphere? Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: cintaray Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.oceania.australia.vic.general/11049.1.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi Deeess Yes thats ok because I was told 2 stories by different relatives 1st that William Lewis left England with his wife Mary Alice Or Alice Mary and that they has a older Daughter and then sometime after Alice Mary Or Mary Alice returned to England for some reason and was accidently killed by a Hansom Cab. William apparently remarried and William Talbot (son) didn't get on with the Stepmother and later left and ran away Unsure if the Stepmother had a Child from previous marriage. 2nd Story unsure if William's wife came out thought she had died in England but not sure as couldn't find any death as we have got no idea where they came from and that the son William Talbot was aged three when he arrived. There was one relative that William Talbot (son) had said he had a bit of welsh in his blood. The (son) William Talbot Lewis was born in Cambridge England have checked records at ancestry, Camdex & Cambridge family history society but no luck also check marriages for William Lewis & Mary Alice / Alice Mary but no luck had others check as well.Looked at Census for 1861 & 1851. Have been chasing this family for some time have William Talbot Lewis (son)death & marriage certificate. Death Certificate Died: 1834 in NSW Cabramatta Aged: 73, lived in Vic 21years NSW 49Years (Which says he must have been 3years when he arrived and the only ship that I can find is the Great Australia) Mothers Name: Alice Talbot Fathers Name: William Lewis Fathers Occupation: Importer Birthplace:Cambridge England Aged married 27 Years (he married in 1887 which means he was born abt 1860) Marriage Certificate William Talbot Lewis Married Mary Keough 1887 at Christ Church Cootamundra Mary's father gave consent as she was under 21 & their is no mother or father listed Or fathers occupation for William Talbot Lewis William's Occupation: Train driver he a bachelor & her spinster A relative had some one from the historical society a few years ago to check the church records and they said that William Talbot Lewis father was William Lewis Occupation: Farmer & Mother Mary Talbot. You can see that his mother uses both names which does happen. Have followed up through Prov as there is a William Lewis listed as importer in Swanston St Melb on Probate & wills then purchased death cert & marriage Cert Not the one as he married Isabella Griffiths in 1857 and there was no mention of his children and that he was a bachelor & her a spinster also checked ship Arrival and he arrived earlier dead end. Have also list of indexs of deaths but there is quite a few there to purchase. Pretty sure he must have arrived on the Great Australia but thought I just might try the Roxburgh Castle as well. Is it possible for some one to check or do I have to use a reasearcher to do this for me or does any one in NSW have Access to these records.
