Alice never married DCM - although Alice said she was a widow in 1911 and gave herself the name C-M...in 1901, she was DUDLEY shown as a housekeeper, living with DCM and his children!Such were the times that the children didn;t even get registered at birth ( although there is one more way of searching this that I haven't done yet ) Also, Walter DUDLEY married Mary Ann PIERSE...you will see a good link in one of the posts about her family...de Lacy was one of her forebears and the name was used as middle names for some descendents DCM and his second wife divorced in 1894 ( Pro UK)and there are some messy articles in the newspapers about his 'banktruptcy' ( don;t know how Alice and chdn could stay on in Kensington with only the 50 quid he left her in his Will) and child maintenance. Mary Ann DUDLEY ( nee PIERSE) died in 1895 in Camberwell London - I haven't been able to find when she returned but I guess she was trying help Alice with her new babies Very timely of you to start on this family just as all this information has been put together!! We have even found photos of some of them so check out the links in the various posts. It would be wonderful if you can add any new information as its an amazing family though hard to track as they travelled so much. Its a shame Walter didn't live long enough to witness the success of his daughters Cheers Jocelyn Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. Hi To find out more information about Edward Spence you will need a copy of his death certificate. That will show who he was married to, where and when; a list of his children if any and how long he was in Victoria or any other state (Tasmania) it should also include who his parents were. Most of these details will be supplied hopefully by someone who knew the deceased (a member of the family.) Below is the registration for his death - you will need to go to BDM Victoria https://online.justice.vic.gov.au/bdm/index-search?action=getHistIdxSearchCriteria where you should be able to download a copy of the certificate. Need to type in Family name Given name and Registation number Below is the only marriage I could find for an Edward Spence - it might be the right one but the only way to be sure is to get Edward's death certificate. I'm currently researching Australian and New Zealand musicians of the fin-de-siecle who came to Europe, and have just embarked on Alice Dudley/Marion Christie-Murray. So your exchanges are fascinating. Alice/Marion is recorded in Who's Who In Music of 1913 as follows: Christie-Murray, Marion, pianiste; b. New Zealand; d. of Walter Dudley and his wife (nee de Lacy Pera); e. at Victoria, Australia, and prepared for musical profession by Madame Tasca and Alfred Plumpton; m. the late David Christie Murray, author and journalist; made her debut in 1882 at Town Hall, Melbourne, as pianist; has frequently played in London, at Bechstein, Aeolian and Steinway Halls; director of British Women Artistes' Society, founded 1909, under the patronage of HM Queen Alexandra. Recreations: Reading and motoring. Address: c/o International Club, 22A Regent Street, s.w. Clubs: International, Austral, Arts and Dramatic. Telephone: 3808 Gerrard. I'll let you know as more emerges. Was she ever married to David C-M? Roger Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Some people just seem to disappear, don't they? Surely the Marjorie belonging to the band cannot be her as she was 'almost' clearly in Gloucester in 1911? Obviously I will have to do a lot more searching if I want to find out what happened to Grace and Marjorie. As for that David CM born 1891, I don't think he could have been Alice's son as at the time of the 1911 census she said that she had had four children, i.e. Dudley, Maurice, Marjorie and Dora. It would be great if one could find their exact birth dates as DCM's second wife said in May 1894 that 'Miss Dudley was now the mother of two children'. I take it that she meant Dudley and Maurice. (see Barrier Miner 14th May 1894, His Domestic Affairs). It would be good to find out exactly who this David born 1891 was, but I cannot find anything. The newspapers online are indeed very interesting, thank you for telling me about them. Best regards, Sue Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I don't know why Malcolm, the son who reported Catherine's death, should have though she came from Inverness when she didn't. They're more than 100 miles apart, though it's an easy route by road or canal up the Great Glen. It may be that Inverness was the initial port they emigrated from, presumably first going to a bigger English port. I never found the name of the ship they were on, though thanks to my long-standing error I was looking too early. There was a boom in emigration to Victoria in 1851 because of the gold rush, so there were lots to choose from. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
