Dear List, Looking for birth details of John Brooks, son of Martha, about 1870/1871 at probably Maindample near Mansfield, Victoria. Did he have any siblings? Also a marriage to a girl called Nellie would help to identify him. Believe this family were living in or near Brunswick around 1900. Most grateful for any information. Monty Smith Southern Flinders Ranges, S.A.
Thank you Alison for the info. I have all of those certificates have been looking for Patrick for 30 years. Also his uncle Patrick Kelleher. I have printed this off for the train but i wanted to say thank you (yet) again. And thank you Roz, i will be looking into this, I like 'naughty' ancestors. OMG Jocelyn, how do you do that? I will go through it properly but i had to send a quick reply because you have started to solve an 80 year old family mystery. Dad and his cousins have always tried to find out why their aunts and uncles got married in Lochwinnoch when they didn't live there, they couldn't work out a connection and you have unearthed 'Uncle John' at Gateside, a name that dad has written down from his aunt. He is going to be so excited. If I trace back John I can find out the family connection and tell dad and his cousin the answer to a question they have puzzled over for over for 80 years. My great grandfather was John, brother of Benjamin and he was a seedsman so he might have been the one that was part of the bankruptcy but the only Uncle John was the captain in Australia so it is still a mystery but at last I have a clue. What a bad weekend to be away from a computer. Brilliant, I will call dad from the train! ALison Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Quinlan. One snippet which might be of interest: "He made a comfortable fortune out of buying and selling stock in the gold era, founding a Ballarat firm which still exists, though without the Hepburn name. He pioneered and revelled in all kinds of sporting clubs and in general enjoyed to the full that exuberant out-door life, combined with hard drinking and long feasting. He also cut quite a figure in female company, leading a long suffering wife to place on his tombstone the words: 'Every one of us shall give an account of himself to God'. He has come down in family tradition as 'naughty Uncle Ben'." Kind Regards Roz Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
