    3. Hi Vee, You could try contacting Vic BMD’s adoption dept. With all your information, they should be able to tell you if there were any babies adopted out by that mother. Yours in Genealogy , Jan , in sunny QLD. original message ----------------------------------- Message: 7 Date: Wed, 19 Feb 2014 11:51:59 +1030 From: "Valerie" <[email protected]> Subject: [AUS-VIC] Query regarding death certificates and birth and deaths of two babies To: <[email protected]> Message-ID: <[email protected]> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Hi, I am wondering if the question I am asking seems impossibility, but I'd like to ask opinions. I have information of two children born to a woman in the 1940's, both children died within two days of being born. Births were around 1 to two years apart. I have both birth certificates and both death certificates for the children, but rumours within the family exist to say that they were believed to have be adopted, as the births occurred outside marriage. Is it at all likely this could have happened, with death certificates registered? Vee

    3. Ailsa, thank you for the reply and information about death certificates, I feel you are probably right and thinking about it more, maybe the adoptions might have been assumed to have happened. It is hard to not believe that a death certificate would be anything but a true record. I'm appreciative of the thoughts from others too, these birth and death records were never known to close family so it was quite a shock and then with a rumor of adoption, just felt I needed some extra thoughts. Can only imagine the trauma experienced at such a time for the mother. Thank you very much to those who responded. I would say that these two births and deaths you have are not the children that were adopted out. Perhaps she had other children that you are not aware of yet as well and they were adopted out. Or relatives might not have known the full story and because the lady in question did not have the children with her they assumed that they were adopted out. In the 1940's, a child that died soon after birth, was still unfortunately not talked about, still of that attitude of just forget it all happened. Poor mother with two children dying so soon after birth, regardless of her circumstances. 3. Thank you Nivard and Michelle, the couple (whom I have reason to believe were divorced) He died 1958 and she died 2002, so it seems that she has a right to call herself a widow as Michelle explained re centrelink. cheers Lyn

    3. Hi If you have been divorced for a long time and not remarried you can be a "widow" even if your husband is still alive. I don't know if this was in effect last century but according to Centrelink definately, nowadays you can. I supposed if she was married to him and he died - technically she is a widow. regards Michelle On 18/02/2014 11:54 PM, Lyn wrote: > Can a woman who is divorced be classed as a widow if her ex-husband dies > before she does and she does not remarry ?? > cheers > yn > > > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message >
