Thanks Sue. I don't know Edward's mother's name, as we only had his father's name from the marriage certificates and no mother's name was given. I know some births at that time weren't registered, but it's so hard not to be able to find one. Just means that the search stops with him, unless I can find his parents. There was a family rumour that he ran away from home as a child/teenager and then went to sea and worked his passage to England. Some say that he also changed his name but we don't know what from. If he wasn't originally a Kelly then that makes it impossible to trace him back. But we have no proof about that. Hi again Have you tried different browser? Failing that I would suggest ringing ancestry on their freephone number
Thank you for that Nivard Managed to do that and will download your recommendation. However still can’t use Ancestry. One thing I am finding is that if I search for ancestry.co.uk and then try to click on the site - it tries to take me to ancestry.com.au but that the site doesn’t open. I can’t work out why I keep getting redirected?Regards Jan Sent from Windows Mail From: Nivard Ovington Sent: Thursday, March 27, 2014 10:30 PM To: Victoria Rootsweb Hi Jan Each time you visit any site you get a temporary internet file and or cookie, these build up and up and can clog a system slowing it down and causing symptoms & glitches such as you are getting, slow opening or partial pages etc A user should clear cache and cookies regularly as a housekeeping exercise When you visit a site you will download a new up to date cookie anyway Clearing them will also reduce the tracking by companies of your movements and web browsing It depends upon the browser how you clear them For Win 7 or 8 and Internet Explorer see :- <http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows-vista/delete-temporary-internet-files> If using a different browser check help or google clearing temporary internet files <insert browser name> There is a very useful utility called Ccleaner which can do this for you, I have used it for years and run it daily after each session and on the odd occasion I get page load problems Its a free utility from Piriform <http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download> There are paid versions but the free version is excellent and will do all versions of browser Once downloaded, should you install it just keep an eye open for other installations in the process, it may suggest you also install the browser Chrome for example, its just a matter of keeping an eye open and unticking a box, it is a free utility after all On first running it may take a time as you will be quite surprised what is building up on your computer, largely without your knowledge You can also run it in Analyze mode which simply looks and lists the files you have but does not clear them On first running any housekeeping exercise such as clearing cookies, it may remove a cookie that automatically logs you into a site (such as Ancestry) once run that cookie may be deleted and the next time you go to Ancestry you would need to log in again, that would remain until you next run Ccleaner However Ccleaner can be taught to retain the cookies you want to save (such as Ancestry for logging in) but on first run I would advise clearing all Ccleaner is updated regularly If you have any other questions feel free to ask Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 27/03/2014 11:31, Jan Moon wrote: > Um Nivard, I hate to admit I don’t know how to do that - can you pls explain? > > Jan ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

Dear all, Further to my previous email... some more details on what I'm searching for in general... I'm researching my gx2-grandfather, Edward KELLY, and his father John KELLY. Apparently Edward was born in Geelong on the 7th February 1859 (according to his London police employment record). But my searches came up with no records for his birth (either in the Victoria online records, NSW records, or local history records). Edward Kelly was in Australia until September 1882, possibly later. And he was in London in early 1883, because he joined the London Police force on 21st May 1883 aged 24. His London Police employment record says is that his previous occupation was as a Sailor - we think he worked his way from Australia to England on a boat - rather than being able to afford to pay for the journey. He had 2 tattoos on his arms, which I believe he could have got while at sea - as I think this was common in those days. My great-aunt told me that he'd told her lots of stories when she was a child about his adventures as a sailor travelling from Australia to England - apparently he worked his passage back from Australia on a 'wind-jammer' - a sail boat. Edward's father was John Kelly, a tin miner from Cornwall (details on Edward's 1st marriage certificate, and from family stories). Edward Kelly's second marriage certificate (in England) says his father was John Kelly, occupation: Gold mine manager. I wonder if he came to Australia in the Gold rush? I found an emigration record for a John Kelly who went from Cornwall to New South Wales in 1850 (on a ship called the Lord Stanley). He was married (to Mary) with 3 children (John, Mary, Caroline). On this ship record it says they were Primitive Methodists. When Edward married he was Roman Catholic - I'm not sure whether he could have been born into a Methodist family and changed later, when arriving in England and falling in love with a Catholic? I'm trying to find out if this John and Mary were my Edward Kelly's parents. They emigrated around the right time and could have had more children on arriving in Australia. I just need to find a link - so really trying to find a birth record for my Edward to show that they are his parents. But having no luck so far. If you can help that would be great. But it is like a needle in a haystack! I might be able to help you in return with some England look-ups or info. Thanks, Emily
Dear all, This is my first post on this list. I've found the Geelong rootsweb list really helpful but was advised to get onto the Victoria list, as not all my queries have been specifically about the Geelong area. My gx2-grandfather Edward James Kelly was apparently born in Geelong, Victoria, Australia (although I haven't been able to find a birth record and neither has anybody else - in either the online Victoria records, or at the Geelong records office). His parents (father called John Kelly) apparently came from Cornwall, England, going over to Australia in the 1850s. Edward emigrated to England in the 1880s, became a policeman in London in 1883 and married my gx2-grandmother in London in 1886. A friend on another rootsweb list helped me find a record (in the NSW indexes) of an Edward James Kelly (born 1860 in Victoria, NSW) who was a policeman in NSW in the 1882. link to index: http://srwww.records.nsw.gov.au/indexsearch/keyname.aspx I ordered the record as I thought it was too much of a coincidence with the name and the job. When I received it, I transcribed what I could read. Could you help me with the bits I'm not sure about? I've put a ? next to bits I'm not sure on - this is what I think it says: Registered no: 4055 Name: Kelly Edward Jas Mounted or foot: M Year of birth: 1860 Height: 5 foot 8 1/2 inches Eyes: Hazel Hair: Brown Complexion: Fair A Native of: Victoria Married or single: S Calling: Groom Religion: R.C. General appearance: Good District: Northern? Probationary constable: 5.1.82 - 1.7.82 and 16.1.86 - 1.7.86 (it also seems to say 'red' underneath?) Date of leaving the force: 19.4.87 Cause of leaving the force: Dis. on. Gratuity? (I don't know what this means) If you can help me clarify any of the above, I'd appreciate it. What does it mean by 'Groom' as his 'Calling'? Is that a type of policeman? And what does 'Dis. on. Gratuity' mean? (have I read it right?) It says he was 5 ft 8 1/2 inches. And according to my gx2-grandfather Edward's London police employment record, he was 5 ft 9 inches, which is pretty close. And his appearance and religion are the same. However, the dates don't quite match up, so not sure. My Edward had tattoos (Indian ink) on both arms, but he might have got those done on his journey from Australia to England - we believe he worked his passage. Thanks, Emily (London, England)
