First mentions of the hotel at TROVE (digitised newspapers) appear in the early 1870s. In 1873 someone was advertising for a baby to 'wet nurse'. Also, around that time, and named 'Zanoni', was a racehorse, an opera singer, and a book titled 'Zanoni', a Rosicrucian tale (published in the 1840's and still advertised and popular in the 1870s). An Augustine Salvatoria Zanoni (born Genoa, Italy; died Queenscliff 1911) and wife Elizabeth (children's births all registered at Queenscliff). Parents Rameos and Katalina. National Archives appear to have information on these people, including men named Raymond TISLER. Steven (Stefan) appears to be from Hungary and arrived 1939, his papers have been digitised and can be read online. You may need to access the records at National Archives to go further, or atleast purchase Raymonds death cert to see if he also was born Hungary. He left for Australia shortly after his first wife Jane Bowden passed away in 1879. He left his young son Thomas Henry Cousins (1875) with his grandmother (Rebecca Cousins) in South Wales. I have no idea if Caleb ever had any contact with his son (my great grandfather) and would love to hear from anyone who may have information about him. I thought it worth asking as my mother mentioned that my gran used to write to an Aunt Mirrie in Australia but she didn't know how they were related. The only person I've found so far on my tree would be Caleb's daughter, Miriam Grace Cousins, sister to Ruby Gwendaline, Lily Violetta etc. If it was her, then this gives me hope that Caleb did keep in touch with his family in Wales. Again I would love to hear from anyone who can help, thank you. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. IMO it is entirely possible that William Divers is also the father of Charles. Illegitimacy such a taboo in those times, and maybe there was initial reluctance to admit responsibility at such a young age. Ann FINN was about 17 years old and William Divers about 22-23 years old at during the pregnacy and birth of Charles. [He is listed as being about 25 years on the marriage certificate dated 28 Feb 1847 at St. Mildred, Canterbury, County Kent, England]. On Charles's birth certificate his father is listed as William FINN (blacksmith) and mother Ann DIVERS. Maybe this is just for the convenience of the marriage records. It served a purpose re his identity. It is also possible that William DIVERS accepted responsibility for Charles and subsequently married Ann FINN "to make an honest woman of her" as they said in those days. I'd be interested in your thoughts. Cheers! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Wonder if we can cross-reference information? I have also written to Brambling thanking for all the details provided on the site. Very helpful. Here is some info on Charles James FINN: Charles James FINN born to Ann FINN in 1845 at Thannington, Canterbury, Kent, England. Thannington is on the Wincheap Estate, not far from Kent & Canterbury Hospital in Canterbury, County Kent, England. Father listed as unknown. Ann later married William Divers on 28 Feb 1847 at St. Mildred, Canterbury. The marriage certificate states her father was Elijah FINN. William & Ann's address is listed as Wincheap, Canterbury, Kent. They had two children: Elijah Frederick Divers born & died 1847 and Elizabeth Ann Divers born & died 1848. Sadly, William Divers died in 1848. Ann Divers and her son Charles FINN, 3 years, lived with Elizabeth FINN(Snr). The 1851 Census data lists Ann Divers, 23 years, and Charles FINN, 5 years, living with Elizabeth FINN (Snr). Sadly, Ann Divers died in 1852. Charles FINN was an only son and the only 'Charles' in the FINN family up to that time. Charles FINN, 6 years, continued to live in the household with Elizabeth FINN. The 1861 Census data lists Ch! arles,16 years, as living in the household with Elizabeth FINN (Snr). He has been mistakenly listed as another son, but he was Ann Finn's son. He migrated to Australia at the age of 21-22 years arriving approx. 1866. He had a large family in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia where many of his descendants still live. Some of his cousins, that is siblings of his mother Ann FINN, migrated to South Australia. Still researching and I would welcome information on Lawrence FINN and James Alfred FINN if you have any so that we may cross-reference. Thank you. Look forward to hearing from you.
