You have attached a lot of things to your tree for John that actually have no mention of John but for Cornelius which makes it very hard to follow any of your info. BTW the Cornelius who ends up living with Lucy is NOT Cornelius Clarence. John is gone from that address by 1931 so maybe he died earlier than you think. So now, the information I have is as follows: Frank Mawdesley Birth oct/nov/dec quarter 1855, west derby, lancashire. Christening 13 dec 1855, lancashire Parents Joseph Mawdesley & Elizabeth Timperley McQuie Death 28th January 1932, buried 29th January, Collie Cemetery Age at death says '88 years', however I agree with you and the dates don't add up. He was 77 at his death which explains the curious date on the transcription mentioned above. Seems like we almost have this man figured out! There are still a couple of questions outstanding. 1. Who is Huxley mentioned as an 'issue' on the death certificate? There is no one in the family named Huxley that I am aware of. Huxley's age at Frank's death doesn't add up to any of the children (he would have been born 1897). Frank's known children are: Violet (b ?), Gordon (b 1908), Ivy (b 1904), Pansy (b 1902), Lilian (b 1900), Cecil McQuie (b 1895), Stanley (b 1893), Ernest Percy (b 1891), Horace Frank (b 1889), William Horace (b 1879) 2. When and how did Frank arrive in Australia? I have seen him registered on a census record age 15 in England in 1871. Family oral history tells of him landing in Sydney off the boat (migration). He later married in Northcote, Victoria 1878. Hmmmm......... Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Edward and family didn't arrive in Australia till 1922. They first appear on VIC Electoral Rolls in 1924 living at Orrong Rd, Armadale, Fawkner. They next appear in 1930 NSW. So by your end date of 1928 (as I assume you know they were in NSW by 1928) and their arrival it could only be from 1922/23 at the earliest. Have you searched TROVE (nla newspapers) they might have a mention Kellie Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: giwi1 Surnames: Leach Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.oceania.australia.vic.general/11541/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I'm looking for a bit oh help in trying to find the location of my Great Grandfathers butcher shop in Melbourne. A few years before my Grandfather died he wrote stories of his life. Below is a part of what he wrote in relation to his fathers Butcher shop. I'm hoping it may have clues someone can use to find the location of the business. I don't have access to any business directories of the era and area unfortunately. Here's what was written... Dad had a butchering business in South Melbourne at the time. I remember walking the area helping Mum and Dad distribute letterheads or poster notifying the opening of a family butchers shop on the main road, just a few doors up from a big butchering emporium, opened many years ago in the district. When Dad opened this small shop it was in a two story narrow building with residence both at the back of the shop and upstairs. The owner of the large butchering business came to Dad, introduced himself, and said, "l don't want to dishearten you, but I will give you a month before you close up through lack of support from the people of the area." The people supported Dad and the business prospered well. The time for the Melbourne Cup day was close at hand, so Dad had an idea. He being a good shopman, decided to catch the attention of the passing traffic, and make people talk, so he displayed a small pig, with a jockey, with cap and silks, riding this pig, over tall parsley in the form of a brush hurdle. White dripping, was moulded into the shape of the jockey and vegetable dye used to paint the rider and silks. The pig was suspended in a jumping position over the hurdle. The cable trams, plying the main road, used to slow up when nearing Dad's shop to allow the passengers to see the display. lt was the talk of the area. The opposition butchery was losing his shop trade with monotonous regularity, while Dad's shop was booming, keeping both Mum and Dad working all day long. lt was not long before the opposition owner, to buy him out at a much-increased price, approached Dad again. Even though Dad wanted to sell, he held out for more money than was offered and eventually got it. Any help is appreciated Dave Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
