Very interesting indeed! I believe the Alfred ARMYTAGE mentioned is Alfred ARMITAGE b 1858 Huddersfield to James ARMITAGE & Jane STEVENSON. James ARMITAGE is s/o Samuel ARMITAGE & Rachael FEATHER who are my gtgtgdparents. Prior research shows that this Alfred ARMITAGE had a daughter Theodora Hague ARMITAGE in 1881 to Mary MILLS, recorded everywhere as his wife although I haven't found their marriage which should have been in 1880. It looks as though she died in 1919 thus allowing Alfred ARMITAGE to marry Annie JENNINGS née JONES, the parents of Geraint ARMITAGE. Although the Theodora side seemed to be (vaguely) aware of her father's eventual marriage to Annie, there was no mention of Geraint. Jocelyn, can you add anything, or was this a Jennings-oriented thread? Howard Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I really feel I have achieved something now, in particular Janet Hastings Davidson's direct family contact. Is Dora buried here in Australia or was she taken back to America? Her daughter was named Melba Jean so I guess that came from the, "Jean" that Janet Hastings was aka. There is a Departure for Dora from San Francisco, California 9 August 1956. Did Janet travel to America too, or did she meet Gerald McKay in Australia? I came across a child Herbert Alf Caldwell born Hotham, Victoria 1895 Reg. No. 30094 mother Janet Calowell. (Caldwell?) Janet doesn't appear to feature in the several Court cases regarding maintenance that her mother Christina featured in. In one Court case the Judge asked Christina if her daughter earned 5 pound a week on the pantomime. Christina also apparently had a share in some gold mines Ballarat and Bendigo area Victoria. The following article appeared on page 5 in the Examiner, Launceston, Tasmania Friday 10 December 1909 Dora Taylor, the Australian vaudeville performer, late with Mr Harry Rickards, who went to America about five years ago, was married on October 21st to Mr H. J. Duffy, a Commandment in the United States Navy. Miss Taylor sends a clipping from a New York paper, which states that she has risen to the top rung of the ladder of fame, styling her "the star fancy dancer of America." Mrs Duffy will retire from the stage. Her mother will live with her at her husband's beautiful home in Connecticut. Mr Duffy is quite a young man, and gained his promotion by bravery at the Philippine insurrection. Christina Taylor (nee Findlay) died in Diamond Creek, Victoria 8/3 1914 aged 58 years, four months of Brights Disease. The informant on the Death Certificate was her Grandson Henry Farley Smith (1895-1964) son of her daughter Anne Berry Davidson (1870-1945) Anne and her husband William Henry Smith lived in the area at the time, their youngest child was born in St Helena, Victoria in 1911. The above indicates she must have kept in contact with at least one child she deserted. From memory I think Anne Berry was the second oldest of Christina and David. They had a child in 1877. One wonders who reared them. You may contact me at the following email address. [email protected] Once again many thanks for your help. 3. Hello John, The family was Church of England denomination. There were six children in all. As you noted, Edward died in Tasmania. I have all the bdm's of the children and also Thomas and Ann Hume except for Mary's death and possible marriage. Archives Office of Tasmania NS 1153-1-3 Recorded in St John the Baptist Church of England, Buckland, Tasmania. Mary, baptised 23 Oct 1849 No. 43. Born 22 Sep 1849, daughter of Thomas & Ann Hume of Maria Island. Signed Charles Dobson of Maria Island. I have all previous facts before Tasmania, I need a bit of direction regarding Electoral Rolls and Census records to find the family immediately after their arrival in Melbourne. The first record of a family member on the mainland was the marriage of Augusta Sarah Hume in 1861 at Deniliquin, NSW. But later records centre around Echuca, Vic.In other words, from 1853 to 1861 is a mystery! -- Ron Hume Adelaide SA

    3. Hi Ron just a point Is this family Roman Catholic? Also do you have them as being listed on a official shipping list as I understand they were only listed as 5 children not individually named with ages. Thomas HUME was on the ship in steerage from Launceston to Melbourne 15th January 1853 by himself on the ship Clarence not the same ship as his wife and children They also had a child named Edward HUME born 1851 and died 1852 in Tasmania too they arrived on ship to Tasmania on 27 3 1847 on ship Mount Stewart Elphinstone from London I will be in at Genealogy SA at Unley on Wednesday & Thursday as a volunteer so will have a look for your Mary a bit more. What if Mary was actually 3 months old not 3 years old on arrival in Victoria then that death would fit. and can you please tell me where you got the date from for Mary's birth I could not find that date when I looked earlier. 3. Hi Lyn I have lots of the Digger CD and even the old NSW etc CD's before Digger. They will not run on 64bit machines. I have an older little netbook that I use just for them, it runs Windows 7 starter but just as 32bit. I attach an external CD drive to it via usb and it works perfectly. My newer laptop Windows 8 and Desktop again Windows 8.1update both being 64bit will not run the CD's. I am not sure what I will do when the netbook eventually dies, but I bought it only a couple of years ago and it does not get used very often, so hopefully it will last a bit yet, as I do use the CD's occasionally and remember I paid about $250 for each one many years ago. A bit of a pain not being able to use on current machines and that Digger software is not being upgraded to match current operating systems. But just wanted to let you know that they still work on Windows 7 ok, but just not in 64bit version. She met and married Hugh Duffy and then later Gustavo Musteller and lived for the best part of her life in America. Yes, you are definitely correct.....this is a challenge. Janet Hastings and Dora were the closest of siblings and remained so, even with the distance, until the day Dora died (17th September 1956) in Brisbane, while visiting Janet (aka known as Jean). I am coming to the conclusion that Janet and Gerald may never married and perhaps that my father, Colyer John McKay, may not have been their biological child. Janet was close to her mother, so being reared by an Aunty somehow doesn't seem correct. She and James Jonas Caldwell were living with Janet's mother when first married and a newspaper article about her divorce stated that she couldn't live with his mother in law and Janet would not leave her. She was only 15 at the time. As a child, listening to my grandmothers stories, it was only ever Dora that she spoke of. Until I started this research we had no idea that there were other girls in the family and a boy. I do know that Harold Ralph was raised by an Aunty (on James's side...Henrietta). My father also never had any idea about the early marriage of Janet or the child until I started the research. It has been a facinating journey, that is for sure.
