This case has been reported in full previously. I have my DNA on three sites, including Gedmatch. My aim is to try to find my family roots. However, if one of my distant relatives was the perpetrator of such heinous crimes, I would prefer they were caught, rather than leaving families of the victims with no solution to who was the person responsible. I was horrified to find the website was open for anyone to search when I read it Wynette. I also would hope it helped police track crooks but it is also open for health insurers to pop in and download information which could compromise people's access to insurance, there are many other things as well but being denied insurance coverage would be a disaster for most of us. Wynnette's right - this has been reported on previously ... ever since 26 April and especially on US genetic genealogy blogs and other sites. And it does NOT mean that health insurers can prowl around on Gedmatch at random, checking on your dna. The US law enforcement uploaded a kit, compiled from dna at the crime scene, to find people who matched that sample. (Then there were several other stages, before they arrested the suspect.) I can't see how doing this would benefit health insurers. Hello Patricia, You have replied to me, but my reply to you does not seem to have come through Rootsweb to my own email. I am wondering if it came to you direct somehow. I did register with Rootsweb again a week or so ago. DNA. It is my understanding that NO medical condition can be detected from that DNA which is counted to give you a connection to anyone else that may be related to you. It IS possible, that anyone registered on one of the DNA websites, "might" post online a notation of an inheritable disease within their families, but is extremely rare. Usually such things are communicated privately. There have been a couple of Tasmanian families that have been followed by the Menzies institute for medical research, as early settler ancestors passed on particular genes that did just that. The ancestor of each has been publicised, but not this century's descendants - except for individuals who wished the condition to be more widely known. The families concerned are now fully informed on these conditions. It came through to the Aus-Tas group which is now the default address, the default used to by to the personal address but not any longer. I have not investigated DNA results for genealogy however I thought if there were any concerns genie lists would be interested in the story.
