I am struck by the Buried by Friends phrase on Mary's death cert. Quakers - commonly called Friends - that might give a clue as to the burial place. Does not the death cert give the place of burial in Tasmania? Dawn - in Victoria . -----Original Message----- From: Garth [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Tuesday, 24 July 2018 8:47 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [AUS-Tas] Patrick Cleary & Mary Paid / Paird / Peard /Peart Good evening to the group I have a large brick wall with this couple and am hoping someone can suggest where I should look for information - they are my great great grandparents I have 4 questions as below Patrick, Born about 1808, Convicted of Larceny (Stealing a Firearm) 8-4-1848 in Thomastown, then Richmond Prison Dublin, Sent to Pestongee Bomagee 11-9-1848, Arrived Hobart 2-1-1849, Conduct record CON33-1-92_00041 Mary, Born about 1829, convicted of Arson, 18-7-1848 at Waterford, Committed 2-10-1848 GrangeGorman Prison, Sent to Lord Auckland voyage 3, 5-10-1848, Left Dublin, 11-10-1848, Arrived Hobart 20-1-1849, Conduct record CON41-1-20_00160 They were sent to New Norfolk, I am wondering who they assigned to Married 24 DEC 1851 - CON 52/3 p86; CON 52/4 They had Patrick Cleary born New Norfolk 28-2-1856, there was also a daughter Margaret born 10 April 1858 baptised 9 May 1858 at St Joseph's , Hobart - I am unable to find any further record of Margaret - can anyone suggest where I may find information on Margaret Mary died 9-12-1868 Hobart General Hospital - Buried by Friends, I am wondering if anyone can tell me where she may have been buried any ideas on where Patrick snr & Patrick jnr went - Patrick jnr had a change in Family Circumstance when he was 12? 1868 - Mothers Death ?? I think the term 'Buried by friends' simply means that the deceased had friends who paid for the burial (and so the deceased avoided a pauper's burial). Hi Garth, I found Patrick Cleary and Mary Paid in the New Norfolk Police volumes POL515 - Register of Male Ticket of Leave Holders in the District showing Place of Residence.and POL516 - Register of Female Ticket of Leave Holders in the District showing Place of Residence. I have reference copies of these from Archives. They cover the period they were under Ticket of Leave in the New Norfolk district and show who they were assigned to. I will forward copies on to you off list. The Mary Cleary that died at the General Hospital in 1868 is obviously not your Mary Cleary. As Dianne pointed out she was Mary Clark/e who arrived on the 'St Vincent' - http://search.archives.tas.gov.au/ImageViewer/image_viewer.htm?CON41-1-25,216,44,F,60 She married a Thomas Cleary in 1853 - https://stors.tas.gov.au/RGD37-1-12p248j2k Doesn't seem to be any individuals dying in Tasmania that match Patrick or Mary and if you haven't found them in NSW or Victoria the hunt is certainly going to take a bit more digging... One thing I did note on Mary Paids conduct record - http://search.archives.tas.gov.au/ImageViewer/image_viewer.htm?CON41-1-20,207,160,L,80 The last offence is 30 July 1864. Hobart/ Idle and disorderly -14 days hard labour /ABJ/ This seems to equate to an offence in the Hobart Lower Courts - https://stors.tas.gov.au/LC247-1-31 scroll to page 1040 but the name is not Mary CLEARY but Mary PRIEST ?. I don't know if this was a clerical error or if Mary Cleary started using the name PRIEST for some reason? It may well be a mistake on the clerk of the court because there was a Mary Priest having felonies committed later in that year and appearing in the courts as well. She was in fact Mary Dunn who also arrived on the Lord Auckland in 1949 -https://stors.tas.gov.au/RGD37-1-12p248j2k and married a George Priest in 1854. A bit of a conundrum with above info and it could be just a red herring because of an officials error? Hope that gives you a little more to work with... Good luck in finding Mary. I had an ancestor that was "buried by friends" and I have not been able to find where. I have searched the church records around where they lived but nothing. Mary may have been buried in St David's cemetery which is now a park and if in an unmarked grave very hard to trace. -----Original Message----- From: Garth <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, 24 July 2018 8:47 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [AUS-Tas] Patrick Cleary & Mary Paid / Paird / Peard /Peart Good evening to the group I have a large brick wall with this couple and am hoping someone can suggest where I should look for information - they are my great great grandparents I have 4 questions as below Patrick, Born about 1808, Convicted of Larceny (Stealing a Firearm) 8-4-1848 in Thomastown, then Richmond Prison Dublin, Sent to Pestongee Bomagee 11-9-1848, Arrived Hobart 2-1-1849, Conduct record CON33-1-92_00041 Mary, Born about 1829, convicted of Arson, 18-7-1848 at Waterford, Committed 2-10-1848 GrangeGorman Prison, Sent to Lord Auckland voyage 3, 5-10-1848, Left Dublin, 11-10-1848, Arrived Hobart 20-1-1849, Conduct record CON41-1-20_00160 They were sent to New Norfolk, I am wondering who they assigned to Married 24 DEC 1851 - CON 52/3 p86; CON 52/4 They had Patrick Cleary born New Norfolk 28-2-1856, there was also a daughter Margaret born 10 April 1858 baptised 9 May 1858 at St Joseph's , Hobart - I am unable to find any further record of Margaret - can anyone suggest where I may find information on Margaret Mary died 9-12-1868 Hobart General Hospital - Buried by Friends, I am wondering if anyone can tell me where she may have been buried any ideas on where Patrick snr & Patrick jnr went - Patrick jnr had a change in Family Circumstance when he was 12? 1868 - Mothers Death ?? Dear Garth, I have some additional information about Mary Paid Lord Auckland 1849 and you might like to contact me 'off list'. According to my notes, the woman, Mary Cleary, who died on 9 December 1868 was a 44 year old Irish-born servant. Information contained in the General Hospital Register noted that this woman was 'Mary Clark ux [wife of] Cleary. She arrived on the St Vincent and had been 20 years in the colony when she died. Mary Clarke's convict record noted that she died in the General Hospital, Hobart, on 9 December 1868. According to the Female Convicts Research Centre database, Mary Clark(e) St Vincent married Thomas Cleary in 1853. With best wishes, Dianne -----Original Message----- From: Garth [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Tuesday, 24 July 2018 8:47 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [AUS-Tas] Patrick Cleary & Mary Paid / Paird / Peard /Peart Good evening to the group I have a large brick wall with this couple and am hoping someone can suggest where I should look for information - they are my great great grandparents I have 4 questions as below Patrick, Born about 1808, Convicted of Larceny (Stealing a Firearm) 8-4-1848 in Thomastown, then Richmond Prison Dublin, Sent to Pestongee Bomagee 11-9-1848, Arrived Hobart 2-1-1849, Conduct record CON33-1-92_00041 Mary, Born about 1829, convicted of Arson, 18-7-1848 at Waterford, Committed 2-10-1848 GrangeGorman Prison, Sent to Lord Auckland voyage 3, 5-10-1848, Left Dublin, 11-10-1848, Arrived Hobart 20-1-1849, Conduct record CON41-1-20_00160 They were sent to New Norfolk, I am wondering who they assigned to Married 24 DEC 1851 - CON 52/3 p86; CON 52/4 They had Patrick Cleary born New Norfolk 28-2-1856, there was also a daughter Margaret born 10 April 1858 baptised 9 May 1858 at St Joseph's , Hobart - I am unable to find any further record of Margaret - can anyone suggest where I may find information on Margaret Mary died 9-12-1868 Hobart General Hospital - Buried by Friends, I am wondering if anyone can tell me where she may have been buried any ideas on where Patrick snr & Patrick jnr went - Patrick jnr had a change in Family Circumstance when he was 12? 1868 - Mothers Death ??
