    1. [AUS-Tas] Nursery at Launceston Female Factory?
    2. Judy
    3. Helping Chris with her research into the children Charlotte Carr and Adam Carr born at the Launceston Female Factory in the 1840s, I began to wonder how the infants were treated there. In Hobart there was a nursery, where the children were sent after weaning. They stayed there for 2-3 years, and were then sent to the Orphan Schools at New Town. Does anyone know what happened in Launceston? There was no Orphan School there. Was there a nursery? Judy

    3. Chris here- from examining my gr grandmother's convict record..ie Charlotte Carr...she was punished for not keeping the nursery clean in FF Launceston. I also read "Convict Lives" edited by Lucy Frost and Meredith Hodgson in which they refer to the nursery as "dirty and overcrowded". My assumption is that a nursery existed but I don't know more details. 3. It seems that young children remained at the Launceston Female House of Correction at the Nursery until age 4 when they were transferred to the Queen's Orphanage in Hobart Town. 3. Have just found an 1832 plan of the upper floor of the Launceston FF. It shows a hospital ward, with adjoining nursery. TAHO, PWD266-1-896. Plans - Launceston Penal Establishment - design for a female factory for 200 women - upper floor - J Lee Archer Judy
