    3. Dear Lists, I have had a query regarding William Nichols (NI) per Royal Admiral 1792 and Willian Nicholls VDL Ocean 1803. The enquiry is, was the William Nichols who was on NI (departed 1796) the same one who arrived in VDL on the Sydney Cove in 1808. I cannot find anything on line to verify this. I have written about Elizabeth Haywood/Nichols (Mistress of Pleasant Banks Mrs Elizabeth Gibson) but at no time did I find any reference to them being the same person. Garry Wilson has a reference to him in Biographic Database of Australia as a possibility, arriving in VDL on the Sydney Cove in 1808. (A man named William Nichols, free, is in the Musters on page 189. ) A little tricky but that is how these queries are coming to me lately.     3. Our research shows William left Norfolk Island and returned to England in c1796, returning to the colony aboard the Ocean in 1803/1804 with his new family. Whilst Elizabeth Haywood (etc) and her children, Elizabeth, Robert and Margaret stayed on Norfolk Island.     3. Dear Irene, You are right the two William Nichols are certainly not the same man. William Nichols ( free Settler) and his wife Frances and their three children arrived in 1803 on the Ocean with David Collins party at what is now Sorrento Victoria and moved on to VDL seven months later, in 1804 when the first settlement was abandoned. I know very little about the other William except that he was at Norfolk Island and was the biological father of two of Elizabeth Haywood's children, Elizabeth and ? George. Hi Irene Saw your message and had a hunt through my old correspondence and found the following regarding a William Nichols sent to me over 15 years ago by Steve Pearsall who is descended from William Nichols and Frances. Steve seemed to think that this William Nichols may have been in touch with Mr Belbin and considered that a move to Tasmania would be beneficial to him and his family financially which proved to be true. These two petitions made by William Nichols are preserved as part of the "Banks Papers" 5 August 1802 application to take family to New South Wales with supporting letters from two sponsors reads; "The humble pettion of William Nichols showeth that your petioner is by trade a cabinet maker and farmer and is a married man 31 years of age hath four children by his present wife the eldest 8 years of age That both him and his wife is very desirous of being fitted out by the government to Botany Bay and being of an industrious disposition and brought up in the country knew something of agriculture and the farming business Therefore flatters themselves would well answer the purpose government hath in view in sending persons there to colonise the place. He therefore humbly solicits the favour of being fitted out for that purpose for which indulgence they will be ever bound gratefully to pray W Nichols 18 White Lyn Pasage, Wych St, Drury Lane". Petition of 18 January 1803 to William Budge from William Nichols of 18 White Lyon Passage, Wych St, Drury Lane reads; "Sir, I hope you will not be offended at the intrusion of this which I have presumed to address to you to solicit the favour of knowing if it is possible for me and my family to go in the next ship to Botany Bay my pettition was presented about six months ago since which I have buried one child both my wife and self are very desirous of going as we both flatter ourselves we shall do well there and hope thro your kindness we shall be permitted so to do I am sir etc etc" Notes on the petitions; William Nichols states in the first petition that he has four children by his present wife. This suggests he had a prior marriage. He states that he was reared in the country. One of his children died between 5 August 1802 and 18 January 1803 while he lived in Drury Lane." William states in his first petition that his eldest child is 8 years of age in 1802, therefore being born 1796 and younger ones born earlier. If this William Nichols and the other William Nichols from NI were one and the same it would have been difficult for him to have sired children prior to 1796 while he was in NI. I hope this helps. I have written about Elizabeth Haywood/Nichols (Mistress of Pleasant Banks Mrs Elizabeth Gibson) but at no time did I find any reference to them being the same person. Garry Wilson has a reference to him in Biographic Database of Australia as a possibility, arriving in VDL on the Sydney Cove in 1808. (A man named William Nichols, free, is in the Musters on page 189. ) A little tricky but that is how these queries are coming to me lately.
