    3. Graeme, The initials are not so much the person who made the entry, but the initials of the magistrate who presided at the hearing where Joseph Pedder received the punishments. Not sure who "S.R.D." was, but he would have been a magistrate. 3. Hi Graeme, There is a list of magistrates and justices of the peace who heard cases and dolled out sentences here.... https://www.femaleconvicts.org.au/docs/lists/Magistrates.pdf Sadly SBD isn't listed.  :-( Cheers, Maree On 20/06/2018 12:29 PM, graeme wrote: > Greetings Meryl and members, > > On reading Joseph’s convict record while consigned to Daniel Stanfield etc . it states while absent with leave Admon, SBD - 3 days cells on bread and water SBD -- Absent without leave etc SBD ???? > > My thoughts are that it is the initials of the name of the person (writer) who made the entry ?? > > Can anyone explain these please .. > > > cheers all, stay safe Graeme Pedder > > _______________________________________________ > AUS-Tasmania Mailing List Website http://www.rootsweb.com/~austashs/ > Contact Admin [email protected] > _______________________________________________ > Email preferences: http://bit.ly/rootswebpref > > Unsubscribe https://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/postorius/lists/[email protected]/ > > Archives: https://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/hyperkitty/list/[email protected]/ > > Privacy Statement: https://ancstry.me/2JWBOdY Terms and Conditions: https://ancstry.me/2HDBym9 > > RootsWeb is funded and supported by Ancestry.com and our loyal RootsWeb community

    3. Maree and all, I've had a look at Joseph Pedder's conduct record in TAHO. The police magistrate's initials at the end of the info re each of his three offences in 1836-37 appear to be "S. R. D." not "S. B. D." I did a random search on treasure-TROVE for these initials and years, and came up with a very unexpected result. The magistrate in question may have been S. R. Dawson of Clarence Plains, who had letters published in the True Colonist newspaper on 2 September 1836, p.275, col.2. He seems to have been in dispute with a Peter Roberts. Here's a bit of the article. "I have now done with Mr. Peter Roberts, and doubt not but the public will concur with me in opinion that all his facts so far have proved to be sheer inventions or expediencies, put forth to promote his own distorted and interested views; therefore, however many the phantoms which his prolific brain may yet conjure up, I shall not trouble myself to exercise more of them, but remain in silence, Mr. Editor, your obedient servant, S. R. Dawson. Clarence Plains, Aug. 29, 1836" Another entry in The Colonist is for 11 March 1834: "BIRTH.—At Claremont, Clarence Plains, on the 12th ultimo, the Lady of S. R. Dawson, Esq., J. P., of a son." Those who know more than me about the history of the area may have more information on Mr. Dawson. TROVE is so wonderful, isn't it. Judy

    3. Graeme, the initials at the end of the sentence are those of the Magistrate/s that a convict appeared before. In this case it's the Magistrate who "Admonished" Joseph. If you take a look at the Female Convict Research Centre website (it's fantastic for anything to do with Female Convicts especially), you'll find a list of the names and districts of most known Magistrates whose signatures you find on convict records. I can't find an SBT, but some of the letters are easily mistaken, so just have another look at your record, and if you know the district where Joseph was assigned, that's another clue to the identity of the Magistrate. Daniel Stanfield Snr came very early from Norfolk Is and lived at Clarence Plains / Green Point from at least 1816 until his death in 1826 with land at Cross Marsh. Daniel Stanfield Jnr appears to have taken over at Clarence Plains and also had land at Ralph's Bay after 1826. https://www.femaleconvicts.org.au/docs/lists/Magistrates.pdf Good luck and I hope this helps others too.....Lorraine. -----Original Message----- From: graeme Sent: Wednesday, June 20, 2018 12:29 PM To: AUS-TAS Subject: [AUS-Tas] Request for assistence re Joseph Pedder (1806-1883) Greetings Meryl and members, On reading Joseph’s convict record while consigned to Daniel Stanfield etc . it states while absent with leave Admon, SBD - 3 days cells on bread and water SBD -- Absent without leave etc SBD ???? 3. Hi Graeme, Suspect the initials S.R.D refer to this gent (taken from death notification) - The Courier, 18th Feb 1842 THE LATE S. R. DAWSON, Esq. -With unfeigned regret we announce the death of Samuel R. Dawson, Esq , J. P., for many years past resident at Clarence Plains, where he per- formed the magisterial duties with that impartiality and justice which so justly obtained for him the esteem of every resident there. This melancholy occurrence took place at his residence, Claremont, on Saturday, the 5th instant, in the 49th year of his age, after a long and painful illness, which he bore with unremitting patience and Christian fortitude. His loss cannot be more deeply lamented by those who were favoured with his acquaintance, than severely felt and de- plored by a family over which he watched with the most tender solicitude. His urbanity of manner, upright conduct, benevolent and unassuming disposition, procured for him the esteem of all who knew him ; and in saying that it will be long ere his station in society be filled by a more worthy or efficient member, we echo but the sentiments of the com- munity in general.
