Dear Listers Many thanks to Janine and Nicole for their generous help with my query about the arrival date in VDL of James MIDDLETON and family between 1832 and 1835. For those who are interested, Janine suggests that they arrived on “Atwick’ on 15 January 1834. While the ‘Atwick’ passenger list published in Launceston Examiner¸ 23 January does not include them, it is likely that the people named as ‘Mr JAMIESON, Sarah and Susannah ditto’ are in reality James MIDDLETON, his wife Susannah and daughter (also Susannah). This theory is supported by a notice in Hobart Town Courier, 17 January 1834, page 2, that advises that there were two engineers among the ‘Atwick’ passengers. Further support is provided by Nicole who points that James Middleton had set up an engineering business in Liverpool Street, Hobart, by May 1834 (see advertisement, Colonial Times, 20 May 1834, page 1.)
