GOODYER, Edward. Alias: Light>, Edward Hello I need some help here trying to decipher what these recordsmean and how to research further. On the GSV catalogue there is this entry. GOODYER, Edward. Alias: Light>, Edward Event:Convict transportation Arrived:1/1/1837 Ship:Mandarin Source:Tasmanian convicts [index] Conduct Record: CON37/3 p898, CON37/5 p1607.. Indent: CON16/4 p62. To check for updates to the index and for information on how to obtain copies of the documents: Comment::Not in conduct record for Mandarin Now if he is not in the conduct record forthe ship Mandarin where do I find more about him. I think there are 2 Edward Light's as convicts. Another one came to Tasmania on the ship Royal Soverign but the one above because of the name GOODYER seems to fit as my Edward August LIGHT's mother was Sarah GOODYER, though I cannot find a baptism for him, so presume he was illegitimate, but Sarah knew who the father was. Edward married Charlotte Jane PRATT in Stratford, Victorian in 1864. Thanks Joy Light.
Hi Joy, If you click onto the Conduct Record for Edward LIGHT of "Mandarin" 1837 the next page tells you there is CON37/1 p1607, and to "Order to use in Person at History Room, 91 Murray Street, Hobart". Maybe you could contact them direct to request a photocopy if it exists? http://www.linc.tas.gov.au/findus/southern/statewide/izone It also says there is Conduct Record CON37/1/3 p898, but this only shows his name and ship - http://search.archives.tas.gov.au/ImageViewer/image_viewer.htm?CON37-1-3,404,396,L,80 His Indent shows he was retried - LIGHT, Edward (proper name GOODYER) of Mandarin, JP2 (no idea), PC Hobart (no idea, conditional pardon?), 18 October 1849, 5 ft 5 inches, aged 23, Protestant, can both read and write, single, Death Recorded, Highway Robbery on Thomas Flynn and stealing a coat; arrived per "Mandarin", tried for Housebreaking, 7 years served at the Isle of Wight; trade-Tailor; native place-Manchester. Family - (father) Thomas GOODYER, (mother) Sarah, at Manchester; 3 brothers - William, Joseph and John; 2 sisters - Elizabeth and Mary - all at Manchester http://search.archives.tas.gov.au/ImageViewer/image_viewer.htm?CON16-1-4,319,64,L,80 http://search.archives.tas.gov.au/ImageViewer/image_viewer.htm?CON16-1-4,319,65,L,80 Trial, 18 October 1849, published the next day; sentence deferred - http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article8765872 Sentence 18 October 1849; death sentence recorded - prisoner had served a sentence of transportation previous to becoming a free emigrant; subsequently sentenced to 18 months imprisonment at the Quarter Sessions, Launceston - http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article2964676 The Edward LIGHT of "Royal Sovereign" 1838, on the last line of his Conduct Record has a notation SV5 p174 - meaning the record continues to another page in a Supplementary Volume; again, you would need to contact the Archives to access this page. The trial at the Old Bailey shows that he was aged 12 when tried on 19 September 1836 - http://www.oldbaileyonline.org/browse.jsp?id=def1-2064-18360919&div=t18360919-2064#highlight Ancestry.com indexes for the Criminal Registers in the UK (sorry, I don't have a sub to search further) shows Edward LIGHT b.abt 1824/1826/1827 and tried 15 June 1835, 19 September 1836, and 9 May 1836 - all at Middlesex; no trials in Manchester/Lancashire. Nothing for Edward GOODYER. If you can access the records at your local library it may show what became of him. The Tasmanian Departures Index has the following - Edward LIGHT, onboard "Adelaide" from Hobart to Port Phillip, 4 May 1846 Edward LIGHT, onboard "Providence" from Hobart Town to Melbourne, 23 September 1852 Cheers Trish Nowra NSW > I need some help here trying to decipher what these recordsmean and how > to research further. > GOODYER, Edward.
