Hi Joy, The AOT convict index has the links to his records for retrials in VDL http://portal.archives.tas.gov.au/menu.aspx?detail=1&type=C&id=79612 As per the previous responses the first link on the page is incorrect. Peter has sent you the correct link. The AOT index has 01 Jan 1837 for his arrival on the Mandarin. Firstly the 01 Jan has been entered as the DB needed something entered when the index was first done and the date from the records was only the year 1837. There is no arrival of the Mandarin in 1837 in VDL or NSW. The Mandarin arrived in VDL with convicts in 1840. Hey may well be the Edward Light who arrived on the Royal Sovereign in 1838 as he is the right age. http://portal.archives.tas.gov.au/menu.aspx?detail=1&type=C&id=42688 regards, Meryl Yost, Launceston, Tasmania ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Administrator: AUS-Tasmania & AUS-Tas-Surnames mailing lists AUS-Tasmania Genealogy pages http://www.rootsweb.com/~austashs/ ----- Original Message ----- From: "Joy L" <lyko3069@tpg.com.au> To: <aus-tasmania@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, July 05, 2014 1:52 PM Subject: Re: [AUS-Tas] GOODYER, Edward. Alias: Light>, Edward GOODYER, Edward. Alias: Light>, Edward Hello I need some help here trying to decipher what these recordsmean and how to research further. On the GSV catalogue there is this entry. GOODYER, Edward. Alias: Light>, Edward Event:Convict transportation Arrived:1/1/1837 Ship:Mandarin Source:Tasmanian convicts [index] Conduct Record: CON37/3 p898, CON37/5 p1607.. Indent: CON16/4 p62. To check for updates to the index and for information on how to obtain copies of the documents: Comment::Not in conduct record for Mandarin Now if he is not in the conduct record forthe ship Mandarin where do I find more about him. I think there are 2 Edward Light's as convicts. Another one came to Tasmania on the ship Royal Soverign but the one above because of the name GOODYER seems to fit as my Edward August LIGHT's mother was Sarah GOODYER, though I cannot find a baptism for him, so presume he was illegitimate, but Sarah knew who the father was. Edward married Charlotte Jane PRATT in Stratford, Victorian in 1864. Thanks Joy Light.
Interestingly there is a small article in the Colonial Times that mentions an Edward Light, Shoemaker and Mason arriving in the Mandarin in 1843 ??? http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/8754122?searchTerm="Edward light"&searchLimits=l-advstate=Tasmania|||sortby=dateAsc Peter On Sat, Jul 5, 2014 at 5:07 PM, Meryl Yost <merylp@tasfamily.net.au> wrote: > Hi Joy, > > The AOT convict index has the links to his records for retrials in VDL > http://portal.archives.tas.gov.au/menu.aspx?detail=1&type=C&id=79612 > > As per the previous responses the first link on the page is incorrect. > Peter has sent you the correct link. > > The AOT index has 01 Jan 1837 for his arrival on the Mandarin. Hmmmm, Broxam lists that there were 51 Government boys ex Parkhurst Reformatory on board. The AOT convict index CD only has 42 records listed. Was he tried in 1837 and then arrived on the Mandarin in 1843? This needs a bit more hunting. 8-) regards, Meryl Yost, Launceston, Tasmania ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Administrator: AUS-Tasmania & AUS-Tas-Surnames mailing lists AUS-Tasmania Genealogy pages http://www.rootsweb.com/~austashs/ ----- Original Message ----- From: "Peter Oakley" <pete.j.oakley@gmail.com> To: "AUS-Tasmania@rootsweb.com" <AUS-TASMANIA@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, July 05, 2014 5:33 PM Subject: Re: [AUS-Tas] GOODYER, Edward. The Edward Light per Mandarin in his indent says he was tried for housebreaking - http://search.archives.tas.gov.au/ImageViewer/image_viewer.htm?CON16-1-4,319,65,L,80 . The boy I mentioned that arrived in the Mandarin in 1843 is recorded here in "Convicts to Australia" as a Parkhurst Boy" and was tried for housebreaking? http://members.iinet.net.au/~perthdps/convicts/park3.html Long shot but might be worth further investigation??
