I have for many years tried to find who the parents of my great grandmother Ellen (Smith) KEY are. She was married in the Parish Church of the United Church of England and Ireland, Launceston 1/1/1872. Our family bible states she was born at Launceston Tasmania 10/7/1850 however I cannot find a record of birth for her. Is it possible that there may be a record of Baptism available? Is it possible that the records of the United Church of England and Ireland exist and would they show more details than the State of Tasmania marriage registration? On her death certificate at Seymour Victoria 21 September 1920, the details were put in by a family friend and only show father as Unknown Smith Station Manager and mother as Unknown Smith maiden name unknown. Hi Laurie, Working only from the date given, there is one unnamed female registered as born on 10/7/1850 - however it was in Hobart. The mother was Mary Sullivan, father name not recorded. RGD 33/ 2540/1850. Looking at it online seems to say Fem: Con: per Barretto Informant is Surgeon Supt Convict Ship Barretto. Unfortunately, this child appears to have died, although she did have at least one more illegitimate daughter. She was given ToL in 1857 ................ No Ellen Smiths born between 1847 and 1852 Ellen Smith married Francis Thomas Key 1/1/1872, age 22 he age 27 at Launceston Reg 346/1872 rgd 37 - see online. If she was born 10/7/1850 she would have been in her 22nd year.
