Hi all, In order to make connections, I'm trying to find out the house numbers of two people who died in Melville St. Hobart before 1895. James Bates died 18/1/1873 and his 3 year old daughter died 17/7/1860, both in Melville St. (But maybe not the same house?) Are there undertaker's records for those times? Or are there other ways to ascertain the house numbers in Melville St? Karen Dunham
Hi Karen Be aware that the house numbers may well have changed from the late 1800s to present. I think for inner Hobart there were two major phases of changes in about 1910 and again about 1940 (from fallible memory) but not every dwelling was affected. If you are trying to identify the same house (or location) today, it may involve a somewhat painstaking trace of the location from the valuation Roll of the time (and you will see over time houses being added along the street in between the existing houses, as blocks are sub divided) forward in time until Post Office directories kick in about 1900 (consistently), then keep tracing forward under different owners. I've done this a number of times, with mixed success. The Metropolitan Drainage Board maps of 1910 and (I think) 1930??? Show exact numbered property and building outlines, so if you are lucky you can see the shape of a house and adjacent buildings along the street to see if it's the same as today. Again, this helps connecting the old numbers to the current building. Undertakers records have been transcribed by the Tas Family History Society http://www.tasfhs.org/ and might well reveal the house number of the time.
