    1. [AUS-Tas] "Princess Royal" free female emigrants 1832

    3. In researching Thomas and Ann Stone's time at the Boys' Orphan School in New Town I have got to the point where the move to the new buildings was delayed by the arrival of the female emigrants from the "Princess Royal" in August 1832. The various accounts of their stay that I have been able to access are fairly sketchy so I wondered if anyone could confirm my impression that the emigrants were housed in the Girls' School and as a result when the girls were transferred from Davey Street, Hobart they were accommodated for the time being in the Boys' School. Also, how long did the emigrants actually stay in residence at the School? Regards, Alex E H Stone Milang, South Australia

    3. Hi Alex, There is a fairly extensive file on the Princess Royal in the Colonial Secretary's Office records (Arthur period) - CSO1/1/612 file 13960. Seems to deal with the wreck of the Princess Royal at Pittwater with references to the female immigrants being moved to Newtown. To what extent the file covers on what your interested in I don't know. As I say its a fairly lengthy file from the glimpse I looked at. You could probably get a reference copy via the copying service available through LINCS- Tasmania.
