In the 1861 gazette a James Bates is listed as occupier of a house in Melville Street owned by M McLoughlin, however no street numbers are shown. In the 1870 gazette a James Bates is listed as occupier of a house at 138 Bathurst Street owned by Henry Marshall of Hill Street.
