Hi Listers Many thanks to Peter and Helen for their generous replies to my query about the Irish families brought to VDL by Captain Michael Fenton (1789-1874) as farm labourers on his estate, 'Fenton Forest', in the early 1830s. As Peter points out, most of them arrived on the vessel 'The Lindsays' in 1832 and seem to have lived happy lives as the Captain's tenants for decades. However, relatively little seems to have been written about them. People who are interested might like to read a short item in 'The Courier' (Hobart) on 10 December 1851, page 3. It describes a 'picnic day' attended by the tenant families and illustrates the deep regard they had for the Captain. Helen reminded me of 'Mrs Fenton's Journal' which is available online at https://archive.org/details/journalmrsfento00fentgoog but her account finishes before the tenants arrived.
