Dear All, "Notes from the Hobart Benevolent Society 1858-1914: Compiled by Joyce Purtscher from the Minute Books" is Joyce Purtscher's latest effort of over 200 pages and is now available. There are roughtly 20 entried to a page (just a rought count by me of several pages) Some entries only one liners (rare), yet another I saw had 30 lines... Joyce's comments are to check the original books, "due to my need to abbreviate when indexing." The books she has indexed are from TAHO, NS 1637/1/1 - 28 October 1859 to 28 December 1871; NS 1637/1/10 - 6 January 1881 to 11 May 1882; NS 1637/1/3 - 5 January, 1888 to 26 March 1903; NS 1637/1/4 - 2 April 1903 to 17 December 1908; NS 1637/1/5 7 January 1909 to 14 May 1914. She comments in the introduction that the books describe a social history of lives of the poor and handicapped during those years; some of the conditions described tell of conditions unbelievable in today's society - housing not fit for habitation, illnesses, lack of clothing and bedding, unemployment, and children aged as young as 9 years working to support their parents! single mothers, breakup of families, lack of education and opportunities especially for females. Congratulations to Joyce and thanks on indexing and sharing this wonderful resource easier to find our poor folk. Maree.
Thank you Maree, That sounds brilliant. Do you have any idea where it will be sold?
