I found this - marriage Digger - Federation Index. Victoria 1889-1901 MOULDER Eliza Jane married OWEN Wm Jno Birth Place: HBERG (her) N WALES (him) Year: 1901 Reg. Number: 6420 It seems she might have been living in, or grown up in, Korumburra but she was born at Heidelberg, a Melbourne suburb. And these children Digger - Edwardian Index. Victoria 1902-1913 OWEN Emily May Father: Wm Jno Mother: Eliza Jane MOULDER Birth Place: OUTTRIM Year: 1902 Reg. Number: 28583 OWEN Annie Father: Wm Jno Mother: Eliza Jane MOULDER Birth Place: OUTTRIM Year: 1905 Reg. Number: 5302 OWEN David Geo Father: Wm Jno Mother: Eliza Jane MOULDER Birth Place: PRESTON Year: 1906 Reg. Number: 21450 OWEN Ernt Moulder Father: Unknown Mother: Eliza Jane MOULDER Birth Place: PRESTON Year: 1909 Reg. Number: 22244R Seems husband might have done a runner as Digger - Edwardian Index. Victoria 1902-1913 MOULDER Ernest Moulder Father: Unknown Mother: Eliza Jane OWEN Birth Place: PRESTON Year: 1909 Reg. Number: 22244R - the R stands for revised - not sure from this which was done first! Could be the registrar stuffed up of course - it would not be the first time I have seen it. No more found in Victoria till it cuts out 1920.. I think Outtrim is down Korumburra way but Preston is certainly a Melbourne suburb. No marriage for Emily May OWEN found. Annie OWEN m BONE Jno Henry 1924 reg 1975 but no way of knowing from index if it is her or not, and probably not. I looked at the MO*LDER surname and did not find anything I recognised. If they went to Tasmania, then that is an explanation. And I found this Digger - Death Index. Victoria 1921-1985 OWEN John Frederick Father: William John Mother: Eliza Jane MOULDER Death Place: HEID Age: 52 Year: 1963 Reg Number: 24824 Heidelberg is also the Repatriation Hospital - a lot of servicemen and nurses etc died there.. even if they lived elsewhere. it is very run down now, not used as the Repat as I knew it growing up a few miles away, and is now part of the "Austin hospital. On the corner roughly of Waterdale Rd and Bell St but it covers several blocks really. The certs can be downloaded from the website of Vic bdm on payment by credit card ($20?) - and it is a pdf to your computer within a few seconds I have found. However, things have VERY recently changed with the website so you will have to search about a bit - but you have all you need and there is no need to pay for searching an index on line. If you want a legal doc - ie handled by human hands and stamped "certified true copy" then you will pay more and wait longer, maybe weeks, and it will land in your letterbox. Searching Trove, I found the obituary for my great grandmother's brother, William John Owen who, as the family story goes, ran away to sea and ended up in Tasmania and who had a daughter named Annie. That was all we knew so I am delighted that the obituary provides a whole heap more information. However, the image is not very good and I would like to clarify some of the details given in the electronic translation. The obituary is in Advocate (Burnie, Tas. : 1890 - 1954) Saturday 8 August 1942 pg. 2 - on Trove at http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/68775612?searchTerm=late%20william%2 0john%20owen%20tewkesbury <http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/68775612?searchTerm=late%20william% 20john%20owen%20tewkesbury&searchLimits=l-state=Tasmania|||l-title=46|||sort by> &searchLimits=l-state=Tasmania|||l-title=46|||sortby The details I would like to confirm are: * when he went to sea - was it aged 13 years or maybe 15 or even 18 years? * his wife's name - It looks like it was Eliza Jane Molder from Kurrumburra, Victoria - is that correct? * when they arrived in Tewkesbury - is it 30 years ago or is it 36 years ago? Now that I know the names of his children and the area they settled in, I have been able to find more newspaper articles relating to the family. William seems to have been quite a vocal person and wrote letters to the editor which is great as I now have some idea of what life was like for them in the Tewkesbury/Oonah area. I have also been able to get some details on the two sons who were missing during the war. Does anyone know if any members of the Owen family still live in the area? I know his sons, Arthur James and John Frederick, moved to Victoria, but it appears that sons David George and William stayed in Tasmania. Many thanks for any assistance with this.
