    2. Val Date
    3. Would a 1908 marriage certificate show the names and ages of the parties, and would the parents of the bride and groom be named? The marriage occurred in Launceston, and the parties were Ada LUTTRELL and Alfred AVERY. Hoping someone can help, regards Val Date

    3. Hi, I presume the format would be the same in all British run colonies when it comes to marriage certificates etc. My grandfather was in the British India Army in the late 1800s up until 1907. He and my grandmother (who was from England but working as a "Lady's Companion" in India at the time they met) married in Bombay in 1907. I have a copy of their marriage certificate where it lists the parents of both bride and groom, ages (date of birth) and occupation of both parties. My grandfather was from New Zealand but had gone off 'to see the world' as a young teenager and after a time in Britain he has joined the British India Army as the Leader of the Viceroy's Band. No doubt meeting my grandmother at one of the soirees or balls held in Simla during the viceregal party's summer holidays in that town where Europeans escaped from the high temperatures on the plains of India. Cheers Ainslie. Cheers Ainslie - in Adelaide.

    3. Hi Val, This information from the old Archives Office of Tasmania. Ray Archives Office of Tasmania INFORMATION RECORDED IN TASMANIAN REGISTRATIONS OF BIRTHS. DEATHS AND MARRIAGES Compulsory registration in Tasmania was introduced in December 1838. Prior to the 1838 Registration Act there was no registration of births, deaths and marriages and these events for this period can only be traced through church records, some of which have been transcribed by the Registrar-General's Department. Notwithstanding that registration was compulsory after 1838, there are many instances of either failure of local returns to be submitted, or neglect by the responsible party to make a registration. Unlike their interstate counterparts, Tasmanian registrations do not give all the data that many people anticipate. The following information is generally included: BIRTHS Prior to 1896 particulars recorded were: Given name (if known at time of registration) and surname. Date and place of birth. Names of parents. Maiden surname of mother. Father's occupation. In 1896 the date and place of the parents' marriage were added. In 1902 the ages and birthplaces of the parents were added. In 1909 previous issue (children) were added. DEATHS Prior to 1897 particulars recorded were: Name of deceased. Date and place of death. Age at death. Occupation. Cause of death. In 1897 the birthplace of deceased was added. In 1914 age at marriage and number of issue were added. MARRIAGES Prior to 1896 particulars recorded were: Names of parties being married. - Date and place of marriage. Age at marriage (sometimes only whether "under" or "over" age, i.e. 21 years). Occupation and status (e.g. bachelor and spinster). Names of witnesses to the marriage. Names of parents, and places of birth, of the parties being married were not added until 1896.
