Hi Trish, I've found in my own research that a lot of birth dates in association with a baptism don't tally with the civil birth registration. I think it is a fact that people just weren't aware of time as we in the modern society are. Thomas probably got up with the sun, went to bed at dark and if he was lucky he might remember the Sabbath without Ann having to remind him !!. I think that would sum up how most farmers or farm labours viewed things in those days. Your probably already aware of Margaret Dunne's line. Seems to be a few online trees like this linked one - http://thisismyfamilyhistory.com/getperson.php?personID=I576&tree=tree1 Margaret Close's brother, Dennis ended up in my neck of the woods, as a patient at the New Norfolk Lunatic Asylum. I just found him in the old New Norfolk Cemetery book I have, dying in 1902 from Brain Trauma and being buried as a pauper. So he's over there rubbing shoulders with quite a few of my ancestors who are buried in the same cemetery!! Thanks for that Peter Just had a look at that site - all that information came from my ancestry.com tree Hmmm! Would nice to be acknowledged in some way! My John Close and wife Margaret Dunn were brick walls for many years. Both of them had ages on MCerts and DCerts that didn't tally with actual birth years. Margaret Dunn was a challenge as her death certificate stated she was born in Tasmania (no registered birth exists but all siblings were born in Victoria!). Her marriage was witnessed by Denis and Madeline Dunn in Tasmania, giving a hint at a possible connection. It wasn't until the pre 1900 BDM became available that, two of the births of John And Margaret's children were registered by AUNTS, Margaret's Sister Amelia and sister-in-law Madeline. Much research and many Victorian BDM certificates later, I could place her and her 12 siblings together. Denis was a miner, I wonder if his head trauma was related! Denis and Madeline's daughter Mary Ann Amelia Dunn married Robert Close, brother of my John Close. The only two Close siblings to marry in the Catholic Church, the rest were C of E - another red herring! Time for a bottle of bubbly and the spa now! Re <<<I've found in my own research that a lot of birth dates in association with a baptism don't tally with the civil birth registration.>>> That is good, so good, to hear! I have a birth date given when my great grandfather was baptised, aged about four or five. It means he was born only a month after his parents married and his mother was then a widow, and her first husband's death was only registered Sept quarter; she married late Dec that same year. England of course. He was said to be born Jan 1861. Census 1861 (March/April) he did not appear, 1871 census he was aged 9. I think that date is out when he was baptized. But, they do not appear to have registered his birth. I have two birth certs which are NOT him but I thought maybe they could have been. John Henry Thomas BERNHARDT he was - parents German - no-one could read or write it seems - he was Benard when baptised, Bennard in one census, Burnhead in another, as well as Barnard, Bernard, Bernhard, etc etc and Johan but called Henry and got Harry sometimes.. and he varied the surname spelling and initials and age etc etc father Johan Fredrick and variations - mother Elizabeth/Alice - - I presume she was named in the home Elise and so.. she was first Mrs Zeitter and it has come up once as Fitten! And Leitter. I have never once, though Henry's found births of about ten children and deaths too, and seven so far found marriages, and.. bigamy figured highly in his life! I would so like to find his birth but it seems I am not to find it. Dawn --- This email is free from viruses and malware because avast! Antivirus protection is active. http://www.avast.com
