Hi Listers, In 1874 the Government required a Return of Books held in various institutional libraries and included Port Arthur, Brickfields, Hobart Hospital, Campbell Street Gaol and Launceston Gaol.https://stors.tas.gov.au/CSD7-1-60 file 1476 and from image 2 are the letters sent out and from image 4 begins the listing for Brickfields - numbered from 154 - into the 1000s and up 3246 Launceston Gaol is from image 14 – 18 with the books not numbered and not including prayer books and Bibles. Port Arthur listing of 3467 books, plus books relating to the various religions (images 18 - 70.) Mostly the books are non-fiction and fiction including some well-known novels of the time. Some books noted as being transferred to other institutions! Some of the novels current at the time of the return are to be displayed in Hobart on 21^May, in the Hobart Reading room…it may be advisable to check place, date and time… Maree
