Hi all, I was able to attend the Female Convict Research Centre seminar today and it was stated that convicts within the probation system had evening classes; instruction in reading and writing. Those convicts who were literate helped with classes. Religious tracts were their text books. Also there is an article on-line in Tasmanian Ancestry, http://tasfhs.org/Volume%2019.pdf use "Control F" to search for the article "EVENING SCHOOL AT THE OLD WHARF PROBATION STATION 1849-50.
