Good Afternoon to the Collective Wisdom, Thank you to everyone who contributed such a wonderful insight to illiterate convicts and the various methods of how they managed to communicate with loved ones and family. My next question is about "Ticket of Leave". My ancestor James White obtained his ticket of leave as per the following entry: NSW Government Gazette, 15 March 1837, Page 253 Colonial Secretary's Office, Sydney, 13th March, 1837. THE Undermentioned Prisoners of the Crown have obtained Tickets-of-leave since the last day of publication :- COUNTY OF CUMBERLAND. AIRDS. White James, Lady Harewood (2) This was in NSW - can anyone tell me if after he received his "Ticket of Leave" - is there anyway of locating him in the colony? Up until 1837 he had been working on the Varro Ville property for Thomas Wills - in 1837 Varro Ville was sold to Charles Sturt, the explorer. Perhaps James was supported in applying for his Ticket of Leave by either the former owner or Charles Sturt?? I just need the next lead to find him. All assistance and advice warmly appreciated. Cheers and thank you in advance. Karen
Karen, I saw a 'Ticket of Leave Passport' a couple of months ago, when a visitor from Queensland visited me and he had a Ticket of Leave Passport with him. I had never seen nor heard of a Ticket of leave Passport until that time. I know little about them, but this website explains that it allowed a Ticket of Leave holder to leave the Police District he was entitled to move freely within, with pemission was allowed to move outside of the Police District with a ticket Of Leave Passport. the website may give you an idea as to where you may find details of each passport he obtained and where he roamed. https://www.records.nsw.gov.au/series/12204 Edie McArthur ------ Original Message ------ From: "K Market Associates" <kma-pr@kma-pr.com.au> To: aus-tasmania@rootsweb.com Sent: Wednesday, 1 May, 2019 At 10:12 PM Subject: [AUS-Tas] Re: Ticket of Leave Good Afternoon to the Collective Wisdom, Thank you to everyone who contributed such a wonderful insight to illiterate convicts and the various methods of how they managed to communicate with loved ones and family.
