HI Lorraine and everyone Thanks very much for sharing all of this fascinating information I think it would be great to construct a table or time-line that lists types of production from all "VDL" era 'land granted' properties through to the present . * My interest is in listing all the products (beverages, foods, etc) that use their actual property names in their product names and specifically those names that were instituted pre 1840. Hi Julie, my William Newnham was involved with Tooth’s Brewery in NSW & also in partnership with his brother Charles in the Woodstock Brewery at Jamberoo NSW. They then moved to Tasmania & William had a property called ‘Lowlands’ ain the outskirts of Richmond. The family have a long history back in England of brewing & they also operated a lot of mills both in England & Tasmania. Just wondered if you may have come across any connection to them in the brewing game in Tasmania. There is a. Dry well written price about their brewing interests if you google Newnham Brothers it will come up. Very interesting as Laurel Bank rings a bell.Happy hunting Susanne. Rayburn Farm was first mentioned in newspapers in 1910. Maria Reardon, nee Ward (wife of Arthur George Reardon) purchased the first block of what became Rayburn in 1896; she paid 200 pounds for 200 acres, first granted to William Gunn in 1852. In 1900 she purchased an adjoining 274 acres off Percy Benjamin and the consolidated blocks became Rayburn. Still owned by descendants. In answer to Julie's request, I have to ask what qualifies a property as 'historic'? I believe most of the Pipers Brook & Pipers River Vineyards would be very early properties in the area that was later known as Lower Piper (Upper Piper was around Lilydale). Some I can identify are below: "Bay of Fires" Vineyard, Baxter's Rd, Pipers River is on the property known as "Idlewild". The vineyard was initially named "Rochecombe", then "Ninth Island". It was one of the earlier properties in this area and owned by Charles Adams (b. 1834) from the 1850s. "Leura" Vineyard - "Leura" property was for sale or lease from David Ritchie in 1855 Almost certain the "Dalrymple" Vineyard at Pipers Brook is on part of the "Wave Crest" property owned by Counsel family. "Wave Crest" was used as a label for some of the "Ninth Island" wines a few years back, but that wasn't the same property. A great online reference is: A History of the Tasmanian Wine Industry Anthony Walker, B.A., Grad. Dip. Ed. Admin.
