    3. Hi Elaine you can search on the Tasmanian Names Index. I did so and the one below came up. https://librariestas.ent.sirsidynix.net.au/client/en_AU/names/search/results?qu=James&qu=Phelps There are his Convict records, (arrival per Marquis of Hastings in 1842 as Philps), and also his Marriage Permission for Sarah Griffiths in 1846 as Phelps. If he was appointed a Constable you may find that in the Newspapers, usually announced in the Gov Gazette I think. 3. Hi Elaine Permission to Marry application here - https://stors.tas.gov.au/CON52-1-2p209 page 404 towards bottom. James names spelt a PHILLIPS and Sarah's name spelt as GRIFFITHS. 'Marquis of Hastings' conduct record here - https://stors.tas.gov.au/CON33-1-29$init=CON33-1-29p159 States became constable 4/3/46 in remarks column. According to his convict record born circa 1811 but marriage certificate puts it at 1814. Closest possibility to him might be the James PHILLIPS dying in 1879 in Hobart - https://stors.tas.gov.au/RGD35-1-9p182j2k Cheers, Peter On Fri, Mar 29, 2019 at 8:43 PM Elaine Jefferson <elainej100@gmail.com> wrote: > Is there and index for this if so xould some one look up James Phelps > or Philips I have a copy of his marriage to Sarah Giffin but need to > know ship he came out to Tas one He was a Constable in the police > force as he stated in the birth for his child and marriage nas I do > not know what happened to him Sarah took her daughter to New Zealand > when? do not know She married again 2 more times!! > Thanks > Elaine > > _______________________________________________ > AUS-Tasmania Mailing List Website http://sites.rootsweb.com/~austashs/ > Contact Admin AUS-Tasmania-Admin@rootsweb.com > _______________________________________________ > Email preferences: http://bit.ly/rootswebpref > Unsubscribe > https://lists.rootsweb.com/postorius/lists/aus-tasmania@rootsweb.com > Privacy Statement: https://ancstry.me/2JWBOdY Terms and Conditions: > https://ancstry.me/2HDBym9 > Rootsweb Blog: http://rootsweb.blog > RootsWeb is funded and supported by Ancestry.com and our loyal RootsWeb > community >

    3. Hi Elaine, The ARAB voyage you are trying to recall arrived in Launceston 31 March 1842 - https://stors.tas.gov.au/CB7-9-1-1 go to page 47. George Court is listed there age 25 and he is marked with having a wife with him but unnamed. The Phillips identified on the same page is JOHN Phillips not James a blacksmith aged 25 who is single. (presumably tis is Sabra Courts brother?) The only reference I can find to a Sabra Court is the birth of a female child, Betsy in Evandale,9 Dec.1842 - https://stors.tas.gov.au/RGD32-1-3-p551j2k Father isn't identified in the entry. Betsy appears to have died in 1843 - https://stors.tas.gov.au/RGD34-1-2p067j2k The James Philips per 'Marquis of Hastings" seems to tick all the boxes when you look at the marriage permissions, the marriage and the births of the children in 1847 and 1849. It also appears that George Courts family and presumably blacksmith John Phillips were in the north of the state and James and Sarah Philips in the south. 3. The 'Arab' and its sister ship the 'Royal Saxon' were bounty immigrant ships. One of the sponsors was Rev. Henry Dowling, of Launceston, who travelled to England to gather immigrants, mainly in Somerset and surrounding counties. The full passenger lists for the ships have been lost, and only partial lists exist. Others may know more about what can be found re these ships.
